Germany Women vs Australia Women prediction: 2016 champions hoping for triumphant return

Germany Women vs Australia Women latest prediction

Germany take on Australia at the Stade de Marseille in France on Thursday 25th July at 6pm, UK time.

As you might expect, women’s football at the Olympics has been dominated by the United States, who have won four of the seven tournaments. One of the other three nations tied on one win are Germany. They won the tournament in 2016, beating Sweden 2-1 in the final in Rio. But they were unable to defend their crown, failing to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.

Germany have had a bit of a mixed bag since then. DFB-Frauenteam reach the final of Euro 2022 having entered the tournament as dark horses — after a tough build-up — only losing to England after extra-time. It was hoped that the Euros run would propel Germany back up the ladder of women’s football but they severely underperformed at the 2023 World Cup, bowing out at the group stage. That run saw Martina Voss-Tecklenburg depart as Germany manager, replaced by Horst Hrubesch.

While Germany were disappointed in their 2023 World Cup performance, for Australia it couldn’t have gone much better. Hosts of the World Cup alongside New Zealand, Australia started the tournament with a narrow in over Ireland before losing to Nigeria. But they came back, and then some. The Matildas thumped defending Olympic champions Canada in their final game to reach the knockout stages.

Denmark and France were dispatched in the knockout stages before Australia exited at the semi-final stage, beaten by England — also losing to Sweden in the third-place play-off. But the feel good factor was high, especially considering they navigated most of the tournament without Sam Kerr who had suffered an injury on the eve of the tournament. Kerr is absent once more, this time suffering an ACL injury in January, but Australia now they can manage without the superstar.

In Mackenzie Arnold, Australia have a solid shot-stopper, one of the best around right now. But the Matildas face a relentless Germany attack. Of course, opposition has to be taken into account, but Germany have scored at least three goals in five of their past six games all in Euro 2025 qualifying.

Germany suffered a huge blow in the build-up to the tournament with Lena Oberdorf suffering an ACL injury during Euro 2025 qualifiers earlier this month. She was replaced in the squad by Janina Minge. Sjoeke Nusken is among those looking to form Germany’s midfield, and the Chelsea star could partner Minge in a two — though she was utilised in a more attacking role by Emma Hayes.

Laura Freigang will occupy one of the attacking midfield roles and may even push up to play alongside Lea Schuller, who gets the nod ahead of Alexandra Popp. There has been some uncertainty surrounding who will start in goal, but Merle Frohms may beat Ann-Katrin Berger for the spot.

In the absence of Sam Kerr, Manchester City’s Mary Fowler has taken the main attacking responsibilities, though Tony Gustavsson rotates the options quite a bit. If Fowler does start up front, Caitlin Foord will play on the left wing, with Hayley Raso on the right. Kyra Cooney-Cross and Katrina Gorry feel like the go-to midfield duo now.

Defensively, Mackenzie Arnold is a must-have between the sticks, while Ellie Carpenter, Alanna Kennedy, Clare Hunt and Steph Catley should play in front of her. Catley captains Australia in Kerr’s absence.

Germany Women vs Australia Women head-to-head

Germany and Australia have faced off five times previously, with DFB-Frauenteam winning three. Australia’s sole victory came in 2005, with Germany winning one and drawing one of the two games at the Olympics.
