The stats behind our Germany vs Ukraine predictions:

  • Germany have kept just one clean sheet in their last 12 matches across all competitions.
  • Two of the nine previous meetings between these nations have been friendlies, with both ending 3-3.
  • Germany have scored first in both of Julian Nagelsmann’s home games as manager.

Final preparations underway for the hosts

The pressure is firmly on Germany at the European Championships this summer. Normally so reliable, Die Mannschaft have exited at the group stage in two of their last three major tournaments and made it past the round of 16 just once in four attempts since winning the World Cup in 2014.

Germany’s last tournament outing saw them crash out of the World Cup in Qatar in disastrous fashion, conceding twice in a 4-2 win over Costa Rica in the final game to exit on goal difference, having taken just one point from their opening two matches.

That would increase the heat enough for any German side but factor in that they’re hosts this summer and those sorts of performances simply won’t cut it. After all, in the three previous tournaments hosted in this country, Germany have never exited before the semi-finals and most memorably went all the way in the 1974 World Cup.

This is match is the first of just two more chances Julian Nagelsmann has to decide on the team that will, hopefully, restore Germany back to the top of international football. Things are now getting serious.

Germany vs Ukraine odds

*Odds correct as of 08:45 on June 3. 18+ only. GambleAware.

This will be a tough game for Germany, but the hosts are odds-on favourites to beat Ukraine. After a tough 2023, Germany did start the year with two very big wins. First they beat France 2-0 in Lyon before coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Netherlands in Frankfurt.

Germany vs Ukraine team news

Germany will be without Nico Schlotterbeck, Toni Kroos, Antonio Rudiger and Niclas Fullkrug for this game, as they were all in action on Saturday in the Champions League final. Kroos and Rudiger’s Real Madrid beat Schlotterbeck and Fullkrug’s Borussia Dortmund, so the mood may be split when they do return. Manuel Neuer returned to training after illness and has been confirmed as Germany’s No.1 for the tournament, so should start here if ready.

Andriy Lunin was also part of the Champions League final, though he started on the bench for Real Madrid despite having kept goal for them throughout the competition.
