Georgia vs Portugal Euro 2024 Prediction: Can the minnows make history?

Georgia vs Portugal Latest Prediction

Alongside Spain and hosts Germany, Portugal are one of just three nations already qualified for the Euro 2024 knockout stages. The 2016 champions came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in their opening match before impressing in a crushing 3-0 win over Turkey in Dortmund. Roberto Martinez has already promised to give minutes to some of his other squad members in this final match, but given the depth Portugal have at their disposal, that could still end up being a world-class starting XI.

Even so, perhaps a lack of sharpness and concentration could give minnows Georgia a glimmer of hope. Few give them a prayer against one of the tournament favourites but Willy Sagnol’s men have impressed many in their first-ever major tournament appearance, losing 3-1 to Turkey but only conceding the third goal late as they hunted for an equaliser, while they drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic next and were only denied all three points when Saba Lobzhanidze blasted over the bar with the final kick of the game.

Portugal can not be caught as group winners, but while a point would give Georgia a very slim chance of qualifying as a third-place team, an unlikely victory would greatly enhance their prospects.

Georgia Latest Team News

Kvaratskhelia is the star man for Georgia and while he plays on the wing for Napoli, he is one of the central outlets for the national team. This wasn’t always the case, with the switch coming more recently, but it continued against Turkey and the Czech Republic with Kvaratskhelia partnering Mikautadze up front — the latter already registering two goals at the tournament, making him the joint-top scorer.

They lead a team that usually sets up in a 3-5-2, with Giorgi Chakvetadze providing some creativity from the midfield three. It’s hard to see Sagnol making changes to his team that fought well against Turkey and the Czech Republic, only finding themselves on one point thanks to wondergoals, heartbreaking misses and a slight overcommitment to attack.

Portugal Latest Team News

As mentioned, Martinez has confirmed he will ring the changes against Georgia, keeping some key players rested and allowing some squad players to stay sharp and involved in the group. That might give Georgia hope, but then you have to consider a rotated XI from the Turkey win would include the likes of Joao Felix, Diogo Dalot, Diogo Jota and Joao Neves.

Georgia vs Portugal Head to Head

These two nations have only ever met on one previous occasion, with Portugal beating Georgia 2-0 in a friendly back in May 2008. Cristiano Ronaldo and 41-year-old Pepe still survive from that match in a Portuguese side that also featured the likes of Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno Gomes and Nani.
