Fulham have climbed back up to 12th in the table — nine points clear of the relegation zone — after winning two of their last three matches, beating Wolves 3-2 and Nottingham Forest 5-0 either side of a painfully unlucky 4-3 loss at Anfield in which they led 3-2 as late as the 86th minute.

Up next is a West Ham side enjoying a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions, most recently coming from behind to beat Tottenham 2-1. The Hammers — now preparing for their third straight London derby — are just three points adrift of the top five despite sitting ninth, while they’ve opened up a five-point gap between themselves and 10th-place Chelsea.

West Ham would be Scudetto contenders in Serie A, says Chiellini

West Ham are certainly enjoying life under David Moyes right now. The reigning Europa Conference League champions, the Hammers are also in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, unbeaten in their last six across all competitions, and just six points adrift of the Champions League places.

Even so, all of that has only been good enough to see them sit ninth in what is a very competitive Premier League table after 15 games. However, according to legendary Italian centre-back Giorgio Chiellini, West Ham would be good enough to battle for a Scudetto alongside Juventus, Inter and AC Milan if they were dropped into Serie A.

Chiellini — who is preparing for this weekend’s MLS Cup showdown with LAFC — was speaking to The Athletic about a range of topics, including compatriot striker Gianluca Scamacca’s struggles in the English top flight. Scamacca managed just three goals in 16 Premier League appearances during his sole season in England, but fared a little better in Europe with three goals in three starts to help West Ham lift the Europa Conference League.

Scamacca has since returned to Italy with Atalanta and already has five goals in five Serie A starts (10 overall appearances) this season.

But that is of little surprise to Chiellini, who holds the Premier League in such high regard that he feels its ninth-best team would be a title contender in Serie A, while also pointing to the supreme physical strength of English players in the Italian top-flight, such as Fikayo Tomori, Chris Smalling and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

“Playing in England is very hard for everyone because physically, you have to be more than 100%. It’s much better than any other league in the world. Very few players can adapt in a short time. They don’t give time to players, especially young players,” said Chiellini.

“Gianluca has played just one year in Sassuolo, and to find consistency is tough. He’s a very good player, and he deserves a little bit more time and confidence from the team, but I understand you cannot wait for players because you need to win.

“If you have another player who is better at that moment, they have to play.”

The 39-year-old centre-back elaborated: “It would have been the same if Scamacca went to Juventus or Inter or Milan, he needed time. Probably in Italy, it’s easier because he knows the league, but West Ham are on the same level as the best team in Serie A.

“Have you seen Smalling or Tomori or Loftus-Cheek? Physically they are three times better than most players in Italy. Physically they have a supremacy that can permit them to destroy the opponents. That’s not something that is easy to figure out.”
