High expectations on Les Bleus

We’re just over a week away from the start of Euro 2024 and France are among the favourites to lift the trophy next month. They’ve been the best-performing European team on the world stage, reaching the World Cup final in 2022 having lifted the trophy four years earlier.

However, they did underwhelm at Euro 2020 between that — five years on from their runners-up finish at their home Euros. At Euro 2020, France won just one of their four games, with three draws and were eliminated on penalties by Switzerland. But this France side is a different beast. They continue to grow under Didier Deschamps and have their top players in form at the right time.

But it isn’t perfect. France did lose their first game of 2024, beaten 2-0 by a Germany side that endured a terrible 2023, finding their feet under Julian Nagelsmann. France rebounded to beat Chile 3-2 and won’t have any problems in continuing that momentum this week.

Luxembourg are an interesting level of opponent, though, not really preparing France tactically for their group stage games against Austria, Netherlands and Poland. So there is every chance that this game could be more about fitness than the result.

“Obviously it’s always good to build your confidence as quickly as possible,” former France striker Louis Saha told Betting Odds of pre-tournament matches.

“Those guys have had a really long season, they have a bit of rest for maybe a few days, then they need to restart and build up the fitness level to prepare for long competitions if they want to go all the way.

“So, I remember, it comes to a little fitness preparation so sometimes you don’t get the result you want, but you build up the confidence. As you said, you start to gel, get the automatisms. So those things are more important because if you want to go all the way, friendly games are not as important. And even the first few games are not as important.

“I remember a competition where we maybe didn’t play really well in the first few games but then you pick up and you readjust with all the mistakes. And you get there because you have the best players, and eventually things get sorted out.”

France vs Luxembourg match tip

Kylian Mbappe to score two or more goals @ 8/5 by Betfred

Kylian Mbappe has been in the headlines this week, with his move to Real Madrid finally confirmed on Monday. Now that that weight is off his shoulders, he will have Thierry Henry in his sights. Mbappe is just five goals behind Henry in second spot on the list of France’s all-time top scorers. He’ll hope to catch and overtake Henry this summer, and he can make a good start against Luxembourg. Mbappe has scored 18 goals in his last 18 games for France, netting more than once on six occasions during that run.

France vs Luxembourg odds

Even with players undoubtedly holding back very slightly to avoid injuries, France should have too much for Luxembourg. That’s reflected in the odds with France massive odds-on favourites. Even the draw is being priced as too tall an order.

France vs Luxembourg team news

France may be without Ferland Mendy and Eduardo Camavinga after their involvement in Real Madrid’s Champions League success on Saturday, and subsequent celebrations. Aurelien Tchouameni wasn’t involved due to injury, so may not be rushed back for that reason. However, he will be fit to feature at Euro 2024.
