France and Egypt lock horns in the semi-final of the Olympics men’s football tournament on Monday at 8pm (UK time).
It’s been a wonderful campaign on home soil so far for Les Bleus, who have won all four of their games so far, beating the United States, Guinea, New Zealand and Argentina without conceding a goal. France seem determined to take gold at their own games, and a star-studded attack featuring the likes of Mateta, Alexandre Lacazette and Michael Olise has caused havoc.
Up next is an Egypt side that has slowly built momentum at these games, suffering a disappointing 0-0 draw with the Dominican Republic in their first game but then going on to beat Uzbekistan (1-0), Spain (2-1) and, most recently, Paraguay on penalties. This is only the third time Egypt have reached the semi-finals of the Olympics men’s football tournament and the first time since 1964. They are still searching for their first medal.
France team news
Thierry Henry returned to his full-strength side for the quarter-final clash against Argentina and should maintain that here. The only absentee for Les Bleus is Enzo Millot, who is suspended following his post-match red card against Argentina.
Egypt team news
Egypt are free of injury and suspension and should stick to a similar XI that made it past Paraguay in the quarter-finals. Pyramids striker Ibrahim Adel is the danger man with three goals at the tournament so far — second only to Morocco’s Soufiane Rahimi.
France vs Egypt head-to-head
This is the first time France and Egypt have ever met at Olympic level. However, the two nations have faced off seven times at senior level with three wins for France and two for Egypt alongside two draws. The only meeting since 1983 was a 5-0 win for France in an April 2003 friendly, featuring goals from now-Olympic manager Thierry Henry (x2), Robert Pires, Djibril Cisse and Olivier Kapo.
How to watch France vs Egypt live
