A reason to celebrate
In their final home game last season, Everton needed to beat Bournemouth to keep themselves safe from relegation — it was also the last game of the campaign. This year, Everton can go into their final home game carefree and in a celebratory mood. The Toffees are safe, and have been for a few games now, thanks to a remarkable turnaround.
Everton have won four of their past six games, drawing with Luton last time out and losing to Chelsea. Having looked in danger of the drop, especially given their multiple points deductions, now is the time to give Sean Dyche flowers for the work he has done. Even with their eight-point deduction, for the Toffees to be 11 points clear of the bottom three with two games left to play is testament to the job being done. Dyche has made Everton tough to beat, particularly at home, and it’s something to build on for next season.
For Sheffield United, this is one final away trip before a return to the Premier League. They won’t go down as the worst Premier League team in history for points, but they are the worst when it comes to goals conceded. As it stands, Sheffield United have conceded 100 goals in the league this season, matching Swindon Town’s tally from 1993/94. But there are two caveats. The first is that Swindon conceded their 100 goals in 42 games, and the second is that Sheffield United have two games left to play.
So unless the Blades manage to keep two clean sheets, they’ll break Swindon’s record. And that looks very likely, with Sheffield United having lost each of their past five games and nine of their past 12 (three draws). In fact, they’ve kept just one clean sheet all season.
Everton vs Sheffield United match tip
Everton to win to nil @ 13/8 by Sky Bet
Just like last season, Everton found form at the right time. Their safety was secured with back-to-back home victories over Liverpool and Brentford. And we should have seen those coming. The Toffees have now won each of their past four home league games without conceding a single goal.
Everton vs Sheffield United odds
Given the records of the two sides, you’d have expected to see Everton as favourites. The Toffees have won their past four at home, while Sheffield United have won just one of their 18 away league matches this season.
