How both teams go into Everton vs Peterborough

The start of 2025 brings the return of the FA Cup, which has entered its third round. That means the introduction of Premier League and Championship sides. Five-time FA Cup winners, it’s now been 16 years since Everton last reached the final. They’ve struggled in recent seasons too, knocked out in the fourth and third rounds in each of the past two years. But both of those exits came against Premier League opposition. The FA Cup may be a welcome break for the Toffees, who have won just one of their past 10 league matches, failing to score in seven of those.

Peterborough have already achieved their best FA Cup run in the past three seasons. Since dropping down to League One, Peterborough have had to make their way through the FA Cup from the first round. In 2022-23, they were knocked out in the second round by Shrewsbury Town, while last season they were beaten in the third round by Leeds United. This season, Peterborough have beaten Newport County and Notts County to make the third round. And they’ll be hoping for an upturn in form, entering 2024 on something of a losing streak.

Everton team news

Tim Iroegbunam and James Garner are expected to be out for this game, though both are closing in on returns. Dwight McNeil missed Everton’s final three games of 2024 but may be back in time.

Peterborough team news

Mahamadou Susoho has been out for most of the season with an injury but could return ahead of the trip to Goodison Park. Gustav Lindgren will be available to play after his move from Degerfors goes through at the start of 2025.

Everton vs Peterborough head-to-head

This will be just the second meeting between Everton and Peterborough United. The Toffees knocked Posh out of the EFL Cup in 2006 with a 1-2 win thanks to an own goal and a late winner from Tim Cahill.
