A deciding Merseyside Derby

Both these sides tasted victory in the Premier League at the weekend, boosting their goals at either end of the table. For Liverpool, it was a 3-1 win over Fulham that saw them move level on points with Arsenal atop the Premier League table with five games left to play. The Reds had suffered in the title race slightly, ceding control after their 2-2 draw with Manchester United and 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend.

The defeat to Palace was sandwiched between two Europa League quarter-final matches against Atalanta, with Liverpool knocked out of the competition following a 3-1 defeat. But they did win the second leg 1-0 and used that to add confidence with full focus now on the Premier League. Of course, Liverpool are now three points behind Arsenal after their win over Chelsea on Tuesday, so the Reds are playing catchup once again.

Assuming they don’t face another points deduction — and there aren’t any in the works — Everton will feel a bit more confident about their chances of safety now. After a long winless run in the Premier League, Everton have now won two of their past three games, only crumbling in a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea.

The winless run was ended by a 1-0 win over Burnley, who were also the last side to be beaten by Everton before their long wait for victory. Then, at the weekend, Everton beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 albeit in very controversial circumstances, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side denied a handful of penalties. But, for Everton, it was a crucial victory over a fellow relegation candidate, leaving the Toffees now five points clear of the drop zone with this being a game in hand on those below them.

Everton have an awful record against their closest rivals, and have won just two games since mid-December. Their 6-0 defeat to Chelsea had a potential to crush their confidence but the Toffees did bounce back against Nottingham Forest. Liverpool also suffered a minor slump but appear to be back on track, so it’s no surprise to see the Reds as heavy favourites.

Lewis Dobbin, Seamus Coleman, Nathan Patterson, Dele Alli, Beto Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was taken off in the win over Forest due to a slight injury, but it is hoped that he will be okay to feature here. It would be good news for Everton, with Beto ruled out for the next two matches at least as the Toffees follow concussion protocol. Seamus Coleman back training but won’t make it back for this one.
