For the last time, Everton open a domestic league campaign at Goodison Park, with the Toffees set to depart for their new stadium on the banks of the River Mersey next year. After barely escaping relegation two seasons running, Everton will hope their Goodison swansong is not one of sorrow and rather, something that provides a platform ahead of the club’s big leap. Sean Dyche’s side have had what can only be described as an average summer, beating Swiss minnows Stade Nyonnais 2-1 before a glamorous tour of northern England which saw them beat Wigan Athletic and Stoke City 1-0, either side of a goalless draw at Bolton Wanderers. Still to come is a much stiffer test in Portuguese giants Sporting CP.

Fulham, meanwhile, are looking to build on an excellent 2022/23 campaign. The Londoners finally ended their spell as a ‘yo-yo club’ with an unexpected but very welcome 10th-place finish, even ending the season above local rivals Chelsea. Marco Silva has become a very popular figure at Craven Cottage and he’ll definitely want to start the season with a win against his former club, following an uninspired pre-season that has featured just one win — 3-2 vs Brentford — and defeats to Aston Villa and Chelsea. Before the big opener, Fulham host Bundesliga side Hoffenheim at Craven Cottage.
