Everton vs Doncaster EFL Cup prediction and stats: Will Toffees kick-start stuttering season?
Everton will look to get their stuttering season off the ground when they host Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening.
The Toffees have suffered two wretched defeats to start the new Premier League campaign, going down 3-0 at home to Brighton before a 4-0 thrashing away at Tottenham last time out. Up next is a clash against Doncaster, who have taken six points from three games in League Two.
Three predictions for Everton vs Doncaster
Everton 2-0 Doncaster (13/2 with BoyleSports)
Everton haven’t lost in the second round of the EFL Cup since the 2001/02 season. Then, they were beaten on penalties by Crystal Palace after a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park. Duncan Ferguson was on the scoresheet for Everton that night.
Beto to score anytime (13/10 with Bet365)
Despite Everton’s need for a win, we may see a shakeup to their XI. Beto is among those hoping to start. The 26-year-old scored as Everton beat Doncaster 2-1 at this stage of the EFL Cup last season.
Highest-scoring half: 1st (7/4 with BetGoodwin)
Each of Everton’s last three competitive goals have come in the first half. The Toffees have also failed to score in the second half in each of their last five competitive matches.
How both teams go into Everton vs Doncaster
It’s been a disastrous start to the 2024/25 campaign for Everton. The Toffees sit bottom of the Premier League table without a single goal or point after two matches. Some leniency must be given to Sean Dyche given the sheer level of injuries he’s dealing with right now. The likes of Jarrad Branthwaite, Seamus Coleman, James Garner, Nathan Patterson and Youssef Chermiti were all sidelined against Tottenham Hotspur, while Ashley Young was suspended.
But the Toffees must pick up some form soon if they’re to give Goodison Park the send-off it deserves and keep the fans onside. Perhaps a cup tie at home against League Two opposition could be just the tonic they need.
After losing out in the play-offs last season, Doncaster will have their eye on promotion from League Two. They’ve started the season well, winning two of their three games so far. The Yorkshire side also put in a convincing performance to beat Salford City in the first round to book this trip to Goodison, and will want to leave their mark on their Premier League opponents.
Everton team news
Dyche will remain the aforementioned clutch of injured players, but Young will once again be available after suspension. The veteran may be rested in favour of young Roman Dixon — who played at right-back against Tottenham — to avoid him getting injured for the Premier League clash with Bournemouth next weekend. Dyche may well see this game as an opportunity to hand first starts to new signings Jake O’Brien, Jesper Lindstrom and Iliman Ndiaye.
Doncaster team news
Doncaster must continue on without the injured trio of James Maxwell, Ben Close and Richard Wood.
Everton vs Doncaster head-to-head
Everton beat Doncaster 2-1 away in the same stage of this competition last season, which was the first meeting of these clubs since 1985 and only the second since the 1950s. Doncaster’s only two wins against the Toffees came back in 1953 and 1951, which was the last time Everton were outside the top flight.
