How both teams go into Everton vs Bournemouth
Everton were handed a tough start to the season, with away trips to Aston Villa, and Leicester, all coming in their first five matches, and things got off to a horrible start with an opening loss at home to Brighton, who ran out 3-0 winners. That was followed up with a humbling 4-0 loss at Tottenham, meaning the Toffees became just the fourth Premier League side to lose their opening two matches in a season without scoring and shipping 7+ goals, along with Leicester in 2001-02 (9 conceded), Wigan in 2010-11 (10 conceded) and Norwich in 2021-22 (8 conceded). With that in mind, this home tie against Bournemouth becomes extremely important, not just to get some points on the board but also to inspire some confidence in Sean Dyche’s squad — which has, admittedly, been well-strengthened over the summer. Everton did, at least, beat Doncaster 3-0 in the EFL Cup during the week.
Bournemouth arguably have an even more difficult start to the season, travelling to Nottingham Forest and hosting Newcastle before this match. However, unlike their hosts this weekend, Andoni Iraola’s men are unbeaten, albeit picking up two points from six available. Bournemouth were aggrieved to not have collected all three points against the Magpies last time out. Another draw would see the Cherries become the first Premier League side to draw their opening three fixtures since Wolves in 2019/20, while the last to draw the first three 1-1 were West Brom in 2004/05. After this showdown, it’s Chelsea at home, Liverpool away and a derby against Southampton to follow. The Cherries enjoyed a strong 2023/24 campaign, finishing 12th, but top scorer Dominic Solanke’s departure to Tottenham has left fans feeling somewhat nervous.
Everton host Bournemouth at Goodison Park on Saturday, August 31st, at 3pm (UK time).
Everton team news
James Tarkowski is expected to be fit to return for Everton, which would be a big boost. Head coach Dyche is currently missing Jarrad Branthwaite (groin), Nathan Patterson (thigh), Youssef Chermiti (ankle), and Dele Alli (groin). Dyche is also urging calm, but Everton’s fans are wary of yet another relegation scrap, especially as this is their final season at Goodison Park.
The Toffees completed the deadline-day signings of Orel Mangala and Armando Broja but neither will feature here, although fellow summer arrivals like Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom will want to start after impressing in the cup during midweek.
Bournemouth team news
Enes Ünal (ankle), Tyler Adams (back), and David Brooks (shoulder) are unavailable, while Philip Billing (back) may not be able to play. Bournemouth have had a modest start to the season, and while some new signings are still adjusting, there is a good understanding of Iraola’s tactics. Their high-pressing style has been effective in unsettling opponents. Evanilson has the potential to make a significant impact for Bournemouth, and Kepa brings quality and experience to the goalkeeping position. Antoine Semenyo continues to pose a major threat in attack.
Everton vs Bournemouth head-to-head
Everton have lost four of their last six meetings with Bournemouth, but their 1-0 victory on the final day of the 2022/23 campaign is a famous one, securing their Premier League status. The last draw between these sides was back in August 2018.
