After a month of action, the 2023 Women’s World Cup comes to an end this Sunday with Spain and England facing off in the final. Both sides are in the final for the first time, which of course means we will get a new winner, with either Spain or England looking to join a small list of the United States, Germany, Norway and Japan as world champions.
The build-up to Spain’s tournament was shrouded in controversy with 15 players striking last year over unhappiness with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and particularly their backing of manager Jorge Vilda, whose off-field management was less than professional. Vilda is also son of the head of the women’s department at the RFEF, bringing nepotism claims. However, just before the World Cup, a number of the 15 made themselves available for selection, for undisclosed reasons, though there was a lot of speculation. On the pitch, Spain finished second in their group behind Japan, having lost their final game 4-0 to the Asian nation. But Spain have bounced back with victories over Switzerland, Netherlands and Sweden to reach the final.
England, meanwhile, are looking to become the third nation to be reigning European and world champions, having lifted the European Championships at Wembley last summer. While this is England’s first ever World Cup final, they had fallen at the semi-final stage in each of the past two tournaments, losing to Japan and United States respectively. But under Sarina Wiegman the Lionesses have shown themselves capable of getting over the line, now it’s time to see if they can go all the way at the World Cup. Despite finishing perfect in their group with three wins from three, England were far from convincing aside from a 6-1 win over China. They were then on the edge of being knocked out, out played by Nigeria in the last 16 and only scraping through on penalties. Colombia fell in the quarter-finals before England ended co-hosts Australia’s dreams in the semi-finals.

Spain Women vs England Women match tip
Teresa Abelleira to score or assist @ 4/1 with Paddy Power
A lot of focus on the Spanish midfield will be on Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas, but England need to make sure they keep a watch on Teresa Abelleira. Playing at the base of the trio, Abelleira has been fantastic for Spain, keeping them ticking and often starting up their best chances. In fact, not only is Abelleira’s 23 chances created the most at the World Cup, it’s nine more than any other player. She has also recorded one assist as well as scoring one goal from 10 shots.
Spain Women vs England Women Bet-Builder tip
Alessia Russo to score anytime, England to lift the trophy & BTTS
Alessia Russo scored the final goal of England’s 3-1 win over Australia in the semi-final to take her total tally to three for the World Cup. She’s one of three England players to score three at this tournament but leads the way for shots and shots on target both in the Lionesses squad and the rest of the competition.
England have shown resilience under Sarina Wiegman, particularly at major tournaments with their unbeaten run now stretching to 12 matches. However, they face a Spain side that have only failed to score once and have netted 17 goals at the World Cup this summer.
