A chance for England to bounce back
Euro 2024 is getting closer. We’re just under two weeks away from the tournament and within the next six days, the 26-man squads will need to be finalised.
England’s preparations see them host Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James’ Park, before facing Iceland at Wembley. The game against Iceland comes just hours before the squad deadline.
Gareth Southgate made headlines with his provisional 33-man squad, which he will take into these two fixtures, with some big names left out. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Ben Chilwell, Reece James and Jordan Henderson will all have to watch Euro 2024 from afar.
Henderson in particular was a point of contention among England fans. The former Liverpool midfielder swapped Merseyside for Saudi Arabia last summer and continued to be picked, booed by England fans. He was in the squad for the March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, having joined Ajax in January.
It didn’t help that England weren’t in good form. They actually go into this game winless in their past three matches. The Three Lions ended Euro 2024 qualifying with a 1-1 draw against North Macedonia in Skopje, needing an own goal to seal the point.
They were then beaten 1-0 by Brazil at Wembley to a late Endrick goal, before Jude Bellingham scored in the fifth minute of injury time to secure a draw against Belgium. It’s England’s longest winless run under Gareth Southgate since going six without victory in the Uefa Nations League — which saw them relegated in 2022.
So this is a chance for England’s 33-man squad to play for their places, while also looking to end the winless run at a crucial moment.
England vs Bosnia & Herzegovina match tip
Handicap: England -2 @ 5/4 with BoyleSports
Even with England’s poor run, they are expected to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina comfortably. The visitors have lost five of their past six away games, only managing a 2-0 victory in Liechtenstein. Of those five defeats, three have come by a three-goal margin including 4-1 defeats to Romania and Luxembourg.
England vs Bosnia & Herzegovina odds
England are understandably heavy odds-on favourites for this one. Despite the Three Lions being on a three-game winless run, Bosnia and Herzegovina have lost each of their past four games. It’s a run that saw Bosnia fail to qualify for Euro 2024.
England vs Bosnia & Herzegovina team news
Gareth Southgate won’t have Jude Bellingham for either of the two friendlies, with the midfielder given a much-deserved rest having won the Champions League with Real Madrid on Saturday. Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire will also be fitness doubts, having been called up despite nursing injuries. Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon and John Stones will all miss out, not being risked with injury issues while Harry Kane will be rested.
Nine of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s squad are yet to be capped, but they still have the likes of Edin Dzeko and Anel Ahmedhodzic among their ranks. Sead Kolasinac has pulled out of the squad due to injury suffered in the Europa League final.
