Ecuador made it back-to-back wins in qualifying as they followed up their 2-1 victory over Uruguay last month with another 2-1 win, this time against Bolivia. It moves them onto three points in their quest to reach the World Cup finals, as they started qualifying on -3 points, docked at the start of the campaign for falsifying birth documents for Byron Castillo in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

It has been 16-year-old Kendry Paez that has stolen the show for La Tri so far however with some incredible displays in his opening two performances. After providing an assist on his international debut against Uruguay, the teenager, who will join Chelsea when he is 18, made history against Bolivia, as he became the youngest ever player to score in a CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier and the youngest player to score for Ecuador at 16 years and 161 days old.

It wasn’t the first time that the teenager has broken records in his already short career, being the youngest ever player to feature at a U20 World Cup and is the youngest ever appearance maker and goalscorer in Ecuador’s top flight, where he plays for Independiente. The soon to be Chelsea man also seems to have a calm head on his young shoulders, confirming his focus for his club and his national side when speaking to ESPN.

“I don’t feel pressure, I am focused on Independiente, on the Libertadores and on playing in the best way.”To get there, I have to keep working, be focused on studying. It will be something special to share things with players like Enzo [Fernandez], with other special ones.

“It’s wonderful, but now I’m focused on Independiente Del Valle. There are two years to go, I know it goes by quickly and I’ll keep doing my thing here. “I’m Kendry, I’m going to give the name to Ecuador. I’m going to continue being me, I don’t want to be compared to Messi. “He’s very special, he’s the best. I’m 16 years old, they cannot compare me with him, because I’m in a process. I have things to improve and gain a lot of experience. Later, with time, perhaps with what I win, maybe as Kendry Paez, the Ecuadorian. It’s me and no one else.”

Even better news for Chelsea fans was that his goal was assisted by soon to be teammate Moises Caicedo (who assisted both of Ecuador’s goals) as a preview for things to come at Stamford Bridge in future seasons.

Colombia, meanwhile, have made an unbeaten start to their qualifying campaign, beginning with a win over Venezuela before back-to-back draws against Chile and Uruguay, who needed secured a point thanks to a stoppage time equaliser from Drawin Nunez after goalkeeper Camilo Vargas had been sent off for a second bookable offence.
