Although Denmark had some exciting players who could win a match on any given day, expectations were not high heading into Euro 2024. The Euro 1992 winners drew all three of their group games but that was enough to finish second and head into the knockout stages. They faced hosts Germany in the last 16 and lost 2-0.

The defeat brought the end of Kasper Hjulmand’s reign, with Morten Wieghorst named caretaker manager. The Danish FA are looking for Hjulmand’s permanent successor, but Wieghorst may be hoping to throw his name into the hat with a positive run in Denmark’s next two games.

Switzerland, meanwhile, went one better than Denmark to reach the quarter-finals. They finished unbeaten in Group A including an agonising draw against Germany which saw the tournament hosts score an injury-time equaliser. In the last 16, Switzerland beat defending champions Italy with relative ease.

They then faced England in the quarter-finals and looked set to send the Euro 2020 runners-up out. Breel Embolo had given Switzerland the lead but Bukayo Saka equalised late on and England eventually won on penalties. Switzerland will now be looking for a second appearance in the Uefa Nations League final, having finished fourth in the inaugural tournament.

Denmark host Switzerland on Thursday 5th September at 7:45pm (UK time) at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Simon Kjaer and Thomas Delaney have both retired from international football, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg taking over as Denmark captain.

Switzerland team news
