Moyes faces off with reporter over questions about his future

West Ham came within minutes of being the first team to beat Bayer Leverkusen in any competition during the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, until Jeremie Frimpong scored an 89th-minute equaliser. Of course, even if the Hammers had held on to the 1-0 scoreline, it wouldn’t have been enough after losing the first leg 2-0 in Germany.

The exit leaves West Ham facing an uphill battle to make Europe again next season, sitting eighth in the Premier League table on 48 points, two behind Newcastle and Manchester United above them. More alarmingly, the Hammers have now won just two of their last 10 games across all competitions and crashing out of Europe has only served to embolden the section of supporters calling for Moyes’ reign as manager to come to an end.

The Scotsman was asked about his future during his post-match press conference, with the question prompting a rather cold exchange between Moyes and the reporter (via BBC Sport):

Reporter: “If this is the end of your tenure at the end of the season, how do you reflect on…”

Moyes: “Sorry, I didn’t get that question.”

Media officer: “We are not focusing on the end of tenures.”

Moyes: “We have just played in a third quarter-final there.”

Reporter: “I was reflecting on the three years you have had in Europe and the moments you have given these fans…”

Moyes: “Better question. We have been in three quarter-finals, won two and were narrowly close tonight. The supporters have been treated to big nights against Alkmaar and Sevilla. Leverkusen are a Champions League team and play that way. We have three fabulous years and we are hoping we can make it four.”
