A crucial relegation six-pointer
For those outside of Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace’s fall may have gone unnoticed. The Eagles have made themselves Premier League regulars, but they are in serious danger of losing that status. Fans were unhappy with both the board and the management of Roy Hodgson, who has now been replaced with former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner.
He will be hoping to fare better than his predecessors however, with just one of the 15 managers to have taken charge of Crystal Palace in the Premier League having won their opening game with the Eagles (D4 L10), with that sole victory coming for Alan Pardew against Tottenham in January 2015.
Some fears may have been allayed on paper recently with the change of manager and Palace winning two out of three games, beating Brentford and Sheffield United, but it was short-lived. Also, it’s worth remembering that those wins came either side of a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal. Following the win over Sheffield United, Crystal Palace endured a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Brighton, before also losing 3-1 to Chelsea and throwing away a 1-0 lead away at Everton in a game that finished 1-1.
Burnley, meanwhile, are stuck in the bottom three and don’t look capable of lifting themselves out. Although we still have 13 games left to go in the season, Burnley’s seven-point gap from safety already looks too hard for them to bridge. They’ve won just three of their 25 games so far, losing a massive 18. They’re only saved from the bottom of the table by Sheffield United’s terrible defence.
Winning just three times all season, Burnley’s last victory came just before Christmas, a surprise 2-0 win away to Fulham. However, they are now winless in their past seven since, with five defeats. It is worth noting, however, that during the run Burnley did face Liverpool (twice), Aston Villa, Manchester City and Arsenal, as well as Fulham and Luton — drawing against the latter duo. It doesn’t feel like any pressure is on Vincent Kompany, but it may grow as the season goes on.
Crystal Palace vs Burnley match tip
Over 2.5 goals @ 11/10 by Bet365
Looking at these two teams, you wouldn’t expect goals. But Selhurst Park has seen some action of late. Palace’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea last time out was the third consecutive Premier League game at Selhurst Park to have seen at least three goals scored. During that run, Palace also beat Brentford 3-1 and Sheffield United 3-2. It’s a similar start for Burnley on the road, with their past three Premier League away games seeing at least three goals scored — all defeats for the Clarets.
Crystal Palace vs Burnley odds
Crystal Palace are the favourites for this tie, odds on with a number of bookmakers, and when you look at Burnley’s away form it’s easy to see why. The Clarets have lost eight of their 12 away games in the Premier League so far this season, managing draws against Nottingham Forest and Brighton while beating Luton and Fulham. Since that last victory just before Christmas, Burnley have lost three consecutive away matches, against Aston Villa, Man City and Liverpool.
The Eagles have lost just one of their last 10 Premier League home games against promoted sides (W6 D3) and have won on three of their four games overall against promoted sides so far this term (L1).
