The stats behind our Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa predictions:

  • Both teams have scored in four of the last five meetings between these sides at Selhurst Park.
  • Aston Villa have lost just one of their last five meetings with Crystal Palace.
  • Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored in all six of Oliver Glasner’s home games in charge of Palace, scoring eight goals at Selhurst Park.

Oliver Glasner’s magic

Crystal Palace was on a downward spiral when they parted ways with Roy Hodgson and needed a change. But no one could have expected his replacement, Oliver Glasner, to have the impact he has already had. It was a rough start for Glasner, with just one win from his opening six games, beating Burnley 3-0 in their first match in charge. However, there were promising signs, and two of their three defeats came against Tottenham and Manchester City.

The 4-2 defeat to Man City was the last time Palace have tasted defeat, going on a six-game unbeaten run since. But it’s not just a six-game unbeaten run; it’s a run of five wins and just one draw. Fulham are the only side to have taken points off Palace in their past six matches, with the Eagles beating Liverpool at Anfield and thrashing Manchester United 4-0 at Selhurst Park. Wolves, Newcastle and West Ham also lost to Palace in that run, and it’s hard to see them lose this weekend.

Aston Villa can go into their final game of the season without a care in the world. They have secured qualification for the Champions League after Tottenham lost to Man City on Tuesday, leaving the Villans five points clear of the London side in fifth. They’re on a bit of a winless run at the moment, drawing two and losing one of their past three games, most recently holding Liverpool to a 3-3 draw at Villa Park on Monday.

That draw was nearly a defeat, too, before Jhon Duran came off the bench to score twice late on and secure a point for Villa, almost shutting the door on Tottenham. So now, there is every chance that Villa could feel the aftereffects of celebrating their qualification for the Champions League.

Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa match tip

Jean-Philippe Mateta to score anytime @ 11/10

Jean-Philippe Mateta is in form, especially when it comes to home matches. The Frenchman loves playing at Selhurst Park and has found his feet since Glasner took charge. Mateta has scored eight goals in six home games under Glasner and netted in all six matches available at Selhurst Park.
