Croatia will aim to win their first international trophy at Euro 2024 this summer. Under the leadership of Zlatko Dalic, they have come close to success. In the last two World Cup campaigns, the Checkered Ones finished as runners-up and in third place. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16 in Euro 2020, which was a disappointment. Croatia has never progressed beyond the quarter-final stage in the European football’s premier international tournament. They are no longer underdogs, and some of their golden-generation players are still on the team. It remains to be seen which Croatian side will turn up in Germany this summer.

Italy, meanwhile, seeks to defend its title and secure its third European Championships crown this summer. The Azzurri won Euro 2020 but faced challenges such as missing the World Cup and changing its manager. Despite this, they finished third in the Uefa Nations League and secured a second-place finish in their qualifying group for this tournament. With a strong tournament history, including winning the World Cup in 2006, Italy faces high expectations at this year’s event in Germany.

Both teams know the best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stages. If one team loses, they will remain optimistic, as there is still a chance to advance.

Croatia Latest Team News

Zlatko Dalic typically sets up Croatia in a 4-3-3 formation with a single midfield pivot. The team’s midfield trio includes Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, and Marcelo Brozovic, but other options are also available. Croatia has also used a 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 formation, occasionally a back-three. During the Euro qualifiers, Croatia averaged 62.5% possession with an 88.75% passing accuracy and 39.88 ball recoveries per match in the 2018 World Cup.

Italy Latest Team News

Luciano Spalletti has been trying out a three-at-the-back formation in recent friendlies, but it’s unlikely to become permanent. The 4-3-3 formation that got Italy to the tournament seems to be the most balanced, allowing them to utilize their talented central midfielders. The Azzurri will focus on maintaining possession, but they can also absorb pressure and launch counterattacks with players like Barella and Davide Frattesi.

Croatia vs Italy Head-to-Head

There are very few nations against which the Italians have struggled; Croatia is one of them. The first meeting in April 1942 saw Italy win 4-0. Since then, it’s been a combination of losses (three, notably at the World Cup 2002) and draws (five). Indeed, the last three meetings ended in 1-1 draws.
