The stats behind our Coventry City vs Ipswich Town predictions:
- Coventry’s clean sheet in their 0-0 draw with Blackburn only served to end a nine-game run (all comps) without one.
- Ipswich, meanwhile, have just one clean sheet in their last five games.
- Coventry are winless in their last five matches across all competitions, while Ipswich have failed to win their last four.
- George Hirst opened the scoring the last time Ipswich faced Coventry and also did so against Hull City on Saturday evening.
Can Ipswich get over the line?
Leeds’ 4-0 thrashing to QPR on Friday offered a huge opportunity for Ipswich Town to climb back into the automatic promotion spots but as has been the case over the last couple of months, it almost feels like nobody wants to go up to the Premier League. Well, apart from Leicester, of course. The Tractor Boys played out a thrilling encounter with Hull City on Saturday evening but could only manage a 3-3 draw, despite taking the lead on three separate occasions.
Luckily for Kieran McKenna’s side, they have one more game in hand on Leeds away at Coventry on Tuesday evening. Even a draw against the Sky Blues would be enough to see them climb into second, although a win would be priceless as it would mean they only need to draw at home to almost-relegated Huddersfield on the final day to confirm their return to the top-flight for the first time since 2002. An incredible achievement given Ipswich were only promoted from League One last season.
McKenna chose to stay upbeat about Saturday’s result and performance, well aware that Ipswich’s destiny remains in their own hands.
“I think we’ll always take the positive perspective from it. That puts us to 90 points. We know the significance of that. I’m not sure anyone has ever before in the EFL got 90 points two seasons in a row in two different divisions. It’s an incredible achievement,” he told reporters. “We know what we need from the last two games. Hopefully, tonight will prove to be a really, really big point.
“Of course, you can say we had the chances to get the fourth goal that would have probably killed the game. On the other hand, we scored two great goals from outside the box, so we’ll take positives and move on to Tuesday night.”
