Colombia Women vs Canada Women prediction: Can defending champs overcome the odds?
Colombia Women vs Canada Women latest prediction
Canada Women’s 2024 Olympics has been full of controversy. In the build up to their opening game against New Zealand Women, it was revealed that their assistant coach and an uncredited analyst were sent home by the Canadian Olympic Committee after two incidents of drones being used to spy on New Zealand Women’s training sessions. Canada Women’s manager Bev Priestman stepped aside for their opening match against New Zealand Women, which they came from behind to win 2-1. But things have escalated since.
Firstly, further reports emerged surrounding historic spying on opposition training sessions, including at the Tokyo Olympics where Canada Women took gold, beating Sweden Women in the final. Priestman was suspended by Canada, and she has now been banned from football for one year by Fifa. Canada’s FA officials Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander have also been suspended from all football activities for a year. And, Canada Women were docked six points from their 2024 Olympics group. It means that, despite winning both of their games, Canada Women go into their final match on zero points.
But they can still reach the knockout stages. All Canada Women need to do is win and they’ll be guaranteed as spot in the knockout stages, as it would lift them above Colombia Women on goal difference. Regardless of what’s going on off the pitch, it would be an achievement if Canada Women were to reach the quarter-finals after having six points taken off them.
Colombia Women are leading the group and will hope to compile Canada Women’s misery. The South American nation lead on goal difference, with a +1 over second-placed France Women who they lost 3-2 to in their opening group game. This is just Colombia Women’s third appearance at the Olympics and they are yet to make it past the group. In fact, they didn’t win any of their first eight matches.
But a historic first Olympics win came against New Zealand Women last time out as goals in either half from Marcela Restrepo and Leicy Santos were enough for the 2-0 victory. A draw will be enough for Colombia Women, but they could even qualify with a defeat as one of the best third-placed teams. But they won’t want to rely on that.
Colombia Women vs Canada Women kicks off at 8pm on Wednesday 31st July, and will be played at Allianz Riviera in Nice.
Although Colombia Women are in the better position in Group A and have looked good at the 2024 Olympics so far, it’s hard to see anything other than a Canada Women win. They’ve managed to win both of their games so far despite everything going on off the pitch, and there’s a fight in this team. However, Canada Women haven’t been perfect, conceding in both of their matches so far.
Colombia Women team news
Colombia Women will still be without Mayra Ramirez who serves a two-game suspension for her red card against France Women in the opening group game. Catalina Perez has missed both games so far due to injury with Katherine Tapia the starting goalkeeper in her stead. Ramirez’s suspension brought a change in formation for Colombia Women with a two-player strike force and they’ll likely to continue with that. Leicy Santos and Catalina Usme were the go-to forwards and should keep their spots.
Canada Women team news
Canada Women switched from a back three to a back four between their games against New Zealand Women and France Women. Adrian Leon and Cloe Lacasse dropped out from the attacking, allowing Jessie Fleming to push further forward with Ashley Lawrence also playing in an advanced position. Simi Awujo came into the midfield to partner Quinn, and may retain her place.
Colombia Women vs Canada Women head-to-head
These two nations have faced off just three times before, with Canada Women winning two to Colombia Women’s one. But Colombia Women did win the most recent meeting in 2015.
