The stats behind our Chelsea vs Newcastle predictions:

  • Newcastle have conceded in 12 of their 13 away league games this season.
  • Chelsea are unbeaten in their past 12 home games against Newcastle.
  • Alexander Isak is the only Newcastle to reach double figures for goals in the Premier League this season (11).

Can either side qualify for Europe?

As we approach the business end of the Premier League season, neither Chelsea nor Newcastle are where they want to be. Chelsea may have experienced a good run to start 2024, but they remain in the bottom half of the Premier League table, with as many defeats as they have won (10).

The Blues also missed their first opportunity to secure European football, losing to Liverpool in the EFL Cup final. They had opted to play for penalties from the start of extra time when they had looked more likely to win in 90 minutes as the game continued. This decision brought even more scrutiny upon Mauricio Pochettino, who has yet to win over Chelsea fans completely.

Although the Blues are still in the FA Cup, there is still a way to go, and big teams are still in it. It means the league is the best route now for Chelsea if they wish to qualify for Europe, with sixth now all but guaranteeing a spot after the Blues lost the EFL Cup final.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are four points clear of Chelsea in 10th, a big fall from last season. Having disrupted the top four, many expected Newcastle to challenge again, becoming regulars in the Champions League battle. Like Chelsea, they have lost nearly as many games (11) as they have won (12),  — already six more defeats than they suffered in all of 2022/23. Their away form has been pretty costly this season, with the Magpies losing eight times on the road in the Premier League, including a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal last time out. It’s a far cry from their form at St James’ Park, which has become a fortress.

Chelsea vs Newcastle match tips

Chelsea are a shade of odds-on to claim a much-needed three points in front of their home fans but it’s hard to have complete faith in the Blues, who have shown signs of improvement on occasion this season but have also put in a number of disjointed performances.

The west London club went on a four-match winning league run at Stamford Bridge over December and January.

However, they have since fallen to a 4-2 defeat at home to Wolves and they’ve won just one of their last five matches in all competitions. Mauricio Pochettino’s task has not been helped by injuries to key personnel and the loss of Ben Chilwell, Levi Colwill and potentially Conor Gallagher are blows to the Blues’ chances in this one.

With Newcastle also tough to weigh up on the road, it could pay to dabble in other markets and over 3.5 goals, while far from a huge price, looks a decent bet at odds-against.

Six of Chelsea’s last eight matches have featured at least four goals – the exceptions were the 1-1 draw at Manchester City and a tightly contested EFL Cup final – while five of Newcastle’s last seven went over the 3.5-goal mark.

With both teams without some key defensive options, two talented attacks could be set for a Stamford Bridge shootout. Newcastle’s chief source of goals could come courtesy of Alexander Isak and the Swedish star is one to keep an eye on in the anytime scorer market.

Isak, who scored in the 4-1 win over the Blues in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, got back on the goal trail against Wolves last time out and his minutes-per-goal figure of 120 is bettered only by Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah among those to have reached double figures this season (excluding this weekend’s matches).
