Two fallen giants
Both these sides come into the game off the back of disappointing draws for different reasons. Chelsea faced relegation-battling Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, who were reduced to 10 men in the first half. The Blues led twice but eventually had to settle for a point, having been on the brink of losing at times.
It leaves Chelsea in the bottom half of the table on 40 points, despite being unbeaten in their past five matches (three draws). The Blues are just four points behind seventh-placed West Ham, however, with two games in hand over the Hammers, so there is hope. At the bottom, there is optimism that seventh would be enough to secure European football, but the Blues have to start winning.
Further up the table, Man Utd will still harbour hopes of a place in the top four. But there’s a lot of work to be done. The Red Devils are currently sixth, 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, with a game in hand. It could have been closer, but Man Utd did suffer back-to-back defeats against Fulham and Manchester City.
Man Utd bounced back to beat Everton 2-0 before their 1-1 draw with Brentford. That draw was certainly an interesting one, as Man Utd were outplayed by their hosts but looked to steal the win with Mason Mount’s 96th-minute strike. However, less than three minutes later, Kristoffer Ajer equalised and secured Brentford a point — the least that they deserved.

Both these sides have been strange this season, never really stringing together a good run of form. But Man Utd may be the more confident of the two, given the recent history. Having already beaten the Blues this season, Man Utd are unbeaten in their past seven games against Chelsea, since a defeat in the 2020 FA Cup semi-finals. In the league, Man Utd haven’t lost to Chelsea in 12 games, since Alvaro Morata scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for the Blues at Stamford Bridge in November 2017.

But this is probably more due to people’s perception of Man Utd than what they expect Chelsea to be able do to.
