Can Chelsea upset the odds to win the Carabao Cup?

Just a few weeks ago, Chelsea were pulled apart by Liverpool in the Premier League, losing 4-1 at Anfield. Although Chelsea felt aggrieved about some decisions not going their way in the early stages, Liverpool were just on a different level to Chelsea.

That performance, followed up by a 4-2 home defeat to Wolves, led to some Chelsea fans calling for Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking. But the Blues are on a good run at the moment. First the knocked Aston Villa out of the FA Cup, winning 3-1 at Villa Park, before another victory by the same scoreline over Crystal Palace.

And, most importantly, last weekend Chelsea left the Etihad with a 1-1 draw having seriously frustrated Manchester City with one of their best performances of the season. And former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf is hopeful that the Blues can build on the result.

Chelsea put in an impressive performance against Manchester City at the weekend – do you think they can build on that to give themselves a good chance of winning the League Cup?

“Yes, definitely. I mean, on top of the City game, you have the Aston Villa game, even if Aston Villa are not the Aston Villa that we saw before this frame where they’re starting to suffer a little bit – they’re still a very good team. Yeah, they have to use that,” he told Squawka.

“We judge the team by its consistency, and that’s what Chelsea have to prove to all their fans in order to be considered as a great team. Now, it’s a mid-table team with young players and experienced players. But what they showed at home against City, and last week at the Etihad Stadium, has proven to the world that they are talented, I have no doubt about that. Now they have to get the experience.

“And against Liverpool, who are full of experienced players, it’s going to be hard, but they can build on something by first winning the Carabao Cup. That would be great. And then see for the next season, because the Premier League is over for us, for Chelsea, even fourth is too far away. So yeah, just try to build consistency and chemistry between the players. That would be really great.”

There have been some doubts thrown surrounding Liverpool in the build up to the game, with the Reds’ growing injury list. Diogo Jota is the biggest blow, out for a few months with a knee injury, while there are doubts surrounding Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.

So, can Chelsea capitalise?

“It really depends on Chelsea, I think, and the way they play,” Leboeuf continued.

“Liverpool have injuries but they have proven that they have depth in their bench, and in the dressing room, and Salah is back. Okay Jota, is going to be a big miss for Liverpool, because Jota has been outstanding, and I really think he’s an underrated player. But Salah is back, so maybe he can balance the deficit. I don’t think Nunez is going to be injured for too long, I think he might be able to play, I don’t know, I don’t have any news. And again, the depth is good.

“Liverpool are a very good team, all the players who are playing there, we can see with Conor Bradley, he can substitute TAA very well and even play the same position in midfield when they attack, and on the right side when they defend. So I don’t have any doubt that Liverpool are going to be competitive, my question mark is all about Chelsea.”

He added: “It should be an open game with Liverpool and Chelsea playing an open game, it’s going to be fantastic. But if you would have asked me a month ago, when they played against them, what would be the result of the Carabao Cup Final? I think, like everybody else, I would say “we’re going to be torn down” and that’s only fair. But with the games that I saw, especially the one last weekend, I said “well we have a slight chance”.

“Liverpool have some injuries and, with all due respect, because I don’t like when I see players getting injured, that gives Chelsea an opportunity to win the Carabao Cup. But obviously, Liverpool are much better than Chelsea right now, and they could even win four titles if they are lucky enough and good enough. But in one game, everything is possible.”

Frank Leboeuf was speaking to Squawka on behalf of BetVictor.

Chelsea vs Liverpool match tip

Under 1.5 goals @ 17/5 by BetVictor

Recent EFL Cup finals haven’t been fun to watch for fans expecting goals. The past three showdowns at Wembley have seen just three goals combined. Last season it finished 2-0 to Manchester United against Newcastle, a year after Chelsea and Liverpool played out a goalless draw. Man City’s win over Tottenham in 2021 finished 1-0 to the Citizens. In fact, Chelsea’s past two EFL Cup final appearances have finished 0-0 after 90 minutes — both going all the way to penalties.

Liverpool are odds-on favourites to win the EFL Cup, but their odds for winning inside 90 minutes have taken a slight hit. Although they are still favourites, Liverpool are no longer odds-on in the 90 minutes market, due to their injury problems. The Reds look set to be without a number of key players, in a blow to their chances of winning a 10th EFL Cup.

However, things are still in their favour, with Chelsea inconsistent right now.
