As well as struggling for victories at home, Chelsea are also finding it tough to keep clean sheets. The Blues have conceded in six of their seven home league games this season, only managing a clean sheet against Luton. It is worth noting that they did shut Brighton out in the EFL Cup in September. Chelsea are also at the top of the Premier League’s card charts with no team being shown more yellow cards than the Blues’ (44) this season. When you add red cards, their total comes to 46, with Malo Gusto and Reece James having been sent off.

Chelsea may have earned a lot of plaudits for their 4-4 home draw with Manchester City before the international break, but it did also continue the Blues’ poor run of form at Stamford Bridge. Mauricio Pochettino has taken charge of seven Premier League games at Stamford Bridge so far this season, winning just the one against Luton. There have been defeats to Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Brentford, all without Chelsea finding the net. But the bizarre thing is, Chelsea have also held Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City to draws. The question is, will they see Brighton as a big team, or an underdog? Chelsea do also have to recover following last week’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Brighton do sit ahead of Chelsea in the table and their fans take glee in that, given how the Blues have constantly looked to raid them for players and staff. The Seagulls started the season well but have hit a poor run of form, particularly away from home, in the Premier League. After winning their first two away trips of the season against Wolves and Man Utd, Brighton went winless in three. The run started with a 6-1 defeat to Aston Villa before a 2-1 loss at the Etihad. Before the international break, they were only saved from a third defeat by a late own goal by Ashley Young. However, they were away last weekend and beat Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, sandwiched between two away wins in the Europa League against Ajax and AEK Athens.
