How both teams go into Chelsea vs Brighton
Another season with a new manager at the helm, there is some quiet optimism at Chelsea. The Blues have picked up 10 points from their opening five Premier League games and are unbeaten in their past four. Most recently they comfortably knocked League Two Barrow out of the EFL Cup, drawing comparisons to Mauricio Pochettino’s struggles against Wimbledon in the second round last season.
Chelsea have also kept clean sheets in each of their past two games, shutting out Bournemouth and West Ham in 0-1 and 0-3 wins respectively. But both of those victories came away from home. In fact, all three of Chelsea’s league wins this season have been on the road. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are winless in two. They opened the campaign with a defeat to Manchester City before a draw against Crystal Palace.
There is also a new face in the dugout at Brighton. Fabian Hurzeler is the man in charge, replacing Roberto De Zerbi in the summer after things had gone stale under the Italian. And Hurzeler has had a good start to life in the Premier League.
Brighton remain unbeaten in the league after five games, one of four teams yet to taste defeat this season. They won their opening two matches under Hurzeler, beating Everton and Manchester United. The winning start came to an end with a draw against Arsenal, and the Seagulls have taken two points from the two following games.
Chelsea team news
Malo Gusto made his return from injury against Barrow in midweek and may make a second consecutive start with Chelsea struggling at right-back. Reece James is still out and won’t be back until after the international break. Romeo Lavia could return but would only make the bench as Chelsea try to manage his fitness.
Christopher Nkunku will be hoping to force his way into Maresca’s Premier League XI after a hat-trick in midweek, meaning the Chelsea boss is spoilt for choice right now when it comes to in-form forwards.
Brighton team news
Brighton will be hoping to have Joao Pedro and Yasin Abbas Ayari available for this weekend, after injury and illness respectively. But this game is set to be too soon for James Milner and Brajan Gruda.
Matt O’Riley is yet to make his debut after signing from Celtic and isn’t expected back until November. Solly March is also an injury absentee.
Chelsea vs Brighton head-to-head
After failing to win their previous five games against Brighton, Chelsea have won their past three games vs the Seagulls.
