Can Chelsea secure unlikely Europa League spot?

If we were to tell you that Chelsea had the possibility of finishing fifth and above Tottenham this season, you would have told us that we were crazy just a few months ago.

However, after a fine run that has seen the Blues lose just one of their last 14 Premier League games (W8 D5) and win four consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since October 2022, they are now on the verge of securing European football for next season. They go into the final weekend in sixth, three points clear of both Newcastle and Manchester United and three points behind Tottenham in fifth.

At the moment, a fifth-placed finish would secure a Europa League spot, while sixth would see Chelsea enter the Europa Conference League. However, if Man City win the FA Cup, then sixth would also be enough for a place in the Europa League. If the Blues were to secure fifth then they would need to beat Bournemouth and hope Spurs lose to Sheffield United, while a draw would be enough to guarantee sixth.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, have had a fantastic first season under Andoni Iraola after a tricky start. They are looking to reach 50 points in a Premier League season for the first time and secure a new personal best for wins in a Premier League campaign. There is also the possibility of a top-half finish as they look to end the season on a high.

Chelsea have won each of their last four Premier League games and their last three at Stamford Bridge, so it isn’t a shock to see them odds on favourites against the Cherries. The Blues also need to win to secure a European spot next season, something that looked all but impossible just a few months ago.
