Can Chelsea continue path to Europe?

With Chelsea at the moment, it feels as though lows very quickly follow highs. The Blues went on a run of five wins from seven across all competitions, which saw them reach the EFL Cup final, only to lose back-to-back games against Liverpool and Wolves. They then beat Aston Villa and Crystal Palace before an excellent draw against Manchester City, only to lose the EFL Cup final against Liverpool — when the match was very much in their hands.

After the cup final defeat, Chelsea made hard work of their FA Cup fifth round tie against Championship side Leeds United, needing an injury-time winner from Conor Gallagher to secure the 3-2 victory and avoid extra-time. They led at half-time against Brentford but fell apart and eventually needed a late goal from Axel Disasi to rescue a point. Even the 3-2 victory over Newcastle had its moments, with Chelsea scoring early but then allowing pressure, having to restart once Newcastle had equalised.

It’s the same for their FA Cup run. The 4-0 scoreline of Chelsea’s third-round win over Preston doesn’t portray how the Blues laboured against Championship opposition. They also had to fight hard to beat Leeds last time, needing a late winner from Conor Gallagher. But their 3-1 replay win over Aston Villa brought one of Chelsea’s performances of the season.

Leicester, meanwhile, will probably have a more comprehensive eye on the Championship promotion race as they have suffered slightly. A three-game losing streak in the Championship didn’t knock the Foxes off the top spot, but it has made things a bit more nervy in their quest for an immediate return to the Premier League. However, amid that losing streak, there was a win over Bournemouth in the fifth round, and Leicester hopes for a repeat of the 2021 FA Cup final when they beat Chelsea 1-0. They have bounced back slightly with a 1-0 win over Sunderland and a 2-2 draw with Hull, with the remaining three points clear at the top of the Champions League.

Chelsea vs Leicester match tip

Over 2.5 goals in the second half @ 49/20

As shown by their recent draw with Brentford, Chelsea are known to fall away after half time. It was also the case late on against Newcastle last time out, as Jacob Murphy scored in the 90th minute to pile the pressure on. In fact, six of Chelsea’s last nine games across all competitions have seen both teams scored in the second half.

If you look at the winner-of-tie odds, Chelsea is a clear favourite. But remember, match odds usually cover the initial 90 minutes, meaning the potential for a draw to take the game to extra-time or penalties adds a bit of spice. Nonetheless, Chelsea is still the favourite to win in 90 minutes, unbeaten in their last 19 domestic cup games at Stamford Bridge.
