How both teams go into Chelsea vs Crystal Palace
This is the fixture that Crystal Palace fear the most. No matter what they do or how they play, the Eagles always end up on the losing side against Chelsea, which was shown perfectly in the last head-to-head meeting at Selhurst Park.
The match looked to be heading for a draw after Conor Gallagher’s 47th-minute strike cancelled out Jefferson Lerma’s opener, but the former Palace midfielder struck again in stoppage time before Enzo Fernandez put the icing on the cake three minutes later. That result meant that Chelsea had recorded 13 consecutive Premier League wins against a single opponent for the first time in their history to heap more misery on Palace and Roy Hodgson.
And Crystal Palace have had a rough start to the new season. Optimism was high given how the Eagles ended last season under Oliver Glasner. But after two games of the new campaign, Crystal Palace remain without a point. They’ve lost to Brentford and West Ham so far, so may be dreading a third London derby.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are trying to find their feet under Enzo Maresca. In the Premier League, Chelsea opened with a defeat to Manchester City but looked much stronger as they beat Wolves 6-2. However, a lot of the good feelings fell away as Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by Servette on Thursday — though they still qualified for the Uefa Conference League league phase.
Chelsea host Crystal Palace at 1:30pm on Sunday 1st September at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea latest team news
Reece James serves the final match of his four-game suspension after being sent off at the end of last season, but he is injured anyway. Romeo Lavia is an injury doubt, having sat out of the win over Wolves, and may not be risked given his problems last season.
Noni Madueke was one of the few players not rested from the start in midweek but he should remain in the XI after his hat-trick against Wolves. Nicolas Jackson will lead the line, while Robert Sanchez returns in goal.
Crystal Palace latest team news
Matheus France and Chadi Riad are out for Crystal Palace. The latter had started in the Eagles’ defeat to West Ham last weekend after Joachim Andersen’s departure, but suffered an injury in the EFL Cup in midweek. Chris Richards came on to replace him but was already in Palace’s first-choice back line. Nathaniel Clyne may keep his spot from midweek to complete the defence.
There are currently doubts surrounding Odsonne Edouard’s future, while Eddie Nketiah has bolstered the attacking options.
Chelsea vs Crystal Palace head-to-head
Chelsea have won each of their last 13 Premier League matches against Palace, their longest winning run against an opponent in their history.
