Betting tips

Cardiff 0-1 Sunderland (13/2 with BetUK)

The away side has won the past four meetings between Cardiff and Sunderland. But Cardiff were the last home team to win, in January 2018.

Jack Clarke to score anytime (11/4 with Sky Bet)

Jack Clarke has been linked with a move away this summer but he remains with Sunderland for their Championship opener. The 23-year-old scored 15 goals for Sunderland last season, more than double the next-best player at the Black Cats.

Sunderland to win to nil (16/5 with BoyleSports)

As well as being a fixture favourable to the away side, winning defences also come out on top. Either Cardiff or Sunderland have kept clean sheet in each of the past five matches between these two sides, all won to nil.

After a couple of seasons battling at the wrong end of the table — avoiding relegation by just five points in 2022/23 — Cardiff City fans will have been relieved to see their side finish 12th in the Championship last season. The Bluebirds picked up 62 points, not quite doing enough to be realistic play-off contenders but keeping them well clear of the relegation battle.

That was quite the contrast to Sunderland, whose 2023/24 campaign started so promisingly but quickly descended into chaos. As late as week 26, the Black Cats were sixth in the table and occupying the final promotion playoff spot. But this was a club that saw three different managers occupy the dugout throughout the course of the campaign, with scandals and dips in form causing havoc. Sunderland lost 12 of their last 20 matches of the season, picking up just 16 points and crashing all the way from sixth to 16th, ending up just six points clear of the relegation zone.

It’s safe to say supporters weren’t happy and it’s now up to new boss Regis Le Bris to make sure Sunderland are back among the promotion hopefuls this time around.

Cardiff take on Sunderland at 12:30pm on Saturday 10th August, at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff City team news

Erol Bulut has remained in the Cardiff dugout and has so far managed to strengthen his squad with the signings of Calum Chambers, Anwar El Ghazi and Chris Willock on free transfers. Alex Robertson and Wilfried Kanga have also come in.

Sunderland team news

Sunderland have added Alan Browne, Ian Poveda, Blondy Nna Noukey and Simon Moore on free transfers. But they are still without a recognised striker.

At the other end of the pitch, the Black Cats have managed to keep hold of goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, who has reportedly drawn interest from a number of top Premier League clubs.

Cardiff City vs Sunderland head-to-head
