Can Burnley turn things around?
Burnley are running out of time. With just 11 Premier League games left to play in the 2023/24 season, the Clarets are staring relegation in the face. They have just 13 points from their 27 games so far, averaging 0.48 per match. Burnley are only saved from the bottom of the Premier League table by Sheffield United having a worse attack and defence.
But it doesn’t matter whether Burnley finish 19th or 20th, relegated is relegated. And at the moment that is looking like their destiny. Vincent Kompany’s men were one of the worst-hit teams from Everton’s points deduction being reduced to six, as it means they are now a whopping 11 points from safety. It doesn’t look like a gap they are capable of bridging, and Burnley may be relying on both Nottingham Forest and Everton getting hit by big points deductions.
The Clarets have won just three games all season, though two of those did come away from home. However, since their last victory on the road, Burnley have lost four in a row. It’s not the best time, then, for them to face a West Ham side that have largely been impressive at home. Sure, there have been a few wobbles including the 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal, but West Ham have won six and drawn four of their 10 home league games this season.
Last time out they bounced back to beat Brentford 4-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Jarrod Bowen, lifting West Ham up to seventh. The Hammers may harbour hopes of European football too, with sixth now likely to offer a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs (barring what would be a historical Liverpool fall).
There have been calls for David Moyes to be relieved of his duties at times. But with back-to-back wins in the league, this has started to die down. In fact, the Hammers have won 12 games and scored 43 goals in the Premier League this season, already more than they managed for both wins (11) and goals (42) in the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign.
West Ham vs Burnley match tip
Over 2.5 West Ham goals @ 9/4 by Bet365
As mentioned, Burnley have lost their past four away games since beating Fulham 2-0 just before Christmas. The Clarets have fallen to Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Crystal Palace, which would be a tough run for any team (with the exception perhaps of a trip to Selhurst Park). So it is somewhat understandable, but the Clarets have still conceded 12 goals during that run. In fact, they conceded three goals in each of those four games, losing 3-2 once, 3-1 twice and 3-0, the latter actually coming against Crystal Palace.
The Hammers have found their shooting boots, scoring seven goals in their last two against Brentford and Everton, as many as they had netted in their previous eight league fixtures beforehand.
West Ham vs Burnley odds
Burnley’s away form will have been taken into consideration in odds for this game, but in general, their season as a whole makes these odds understandable. No team has won fewer or lost more games than Burnley, with only Sheffield United scoring fewer and conceding more. West Ham, meanwhile, ended a long wait for a win last time out against Brentford and will be backed to build on it.
