Burnley vs Manchester City odds
Burnley mark their return to the Premier League on Friday night with a home fixture against the champions Manchester City at Turf Moor. It feels almost serendipitous that Vincent Kompany’s first game as a Premier League manager will come against the club at which he became a legend as a player, making 360 appearances for over a 10-year spell.
The Citizens were history-makers last season in winning a Treble, but a visit to Turf Moor may be seen as a tricky one to start the season with, as the Clarets will be in high spirits following last year’s domination of the Championship. However, as the odds suggest, Pep Guardiola’s men are the much stronger side and should take all three points to get yet another defence of their Premier League title underway.
This will be the first time the reigning Premier League champions are playing the very first match of the season since 2016/17, when Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester lost 2-1 at newly promoted Hull City.

Burnley vs Manchester City match tip
Man City to win both halves @ 2/1 with Betfair
Manchester City will be out to assert their dominance on the Premier League from the off on Friday night and as the odds suggest, they’re much stronger than their opening day opponents Burnley. The Citizens won both halves in 12 of their league games last term and we expect them to ease to the three points in a similar fashion here.
Burnley vs Manchester City Bet-Builder tip
BTTS No, Kevin de Bruyne to get an assist and Jack Cork to be carded
City conceded just 33 goals in the Premier League last term, the joint-fewest in the league alongside Newcastle, while Burnley haven’t managed to find the net in any of their last seven meetings with the Mancunian side. Pep Guardiola’s side have won their opening Premier League game in 12 of the last 14 seasons, with both exceptions coming against Tottenham Hotspur (0-0 in 2010-11, 0-1 in 2021-22).
Kevin De Bruyne was the league’s top assister with 16 last time out, so we can see him supplying Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez with the chances in this game. Attempting to stop him will be the experienced Jack Cork – but the Clarets midfielder found himself in the book no fewer than 12 times in the Championship last term.

Burnley vs Manchester City team news
Burnley’s summer transfer business has been interesting and plenty of focus will be on new goalkeeper James Trafford, who has joined from Friday’s opponents Manchester City during this window. Dara O’Shea and Nathan Redmond are the two players to arrive at Turf Moor with previous Premier League experience.

Manchester City have been relatively quiet in the transfer window this summer, replacing the outgoing Ilkay Gundogan with Mateo Kovacic in midfield, while the Croatian’s international team-mate Josko Gvardiol is the club’s only other summer signing so far. Nathan Ake missed the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, but should be fit enough for a place on the bench on Friday.

You have to go back to 2015 to find the last time that Burnley beat Manchester City, with 15 of the 16 meetings between the two clubs since then ending in wins for the Citizens. The Clarets succumbed to a humbling 6-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium in last season’s FA Cup in which Erling Haaland scored an emphatic hat-trick.
