Burnley vs Blackburn prediction and stats: An intriguing East Lancashire derby

The East Lancashire derby returns to the Championship with Burnley hosting rivals Blackburn on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides have started the new season well. Blackburn are still unbeaten in the league with two wins and a draw from their opening three games. Burnley won their opening two games but did lose last time out.

Three Burnley vs Blackburn predictions

Burnley 2-0 Blackburn (17/2 with Star Sports)

This is a fixture that Burnley have enjoyed in recent times. The Clarets have beaten their rivals in six consecutive matches since 2014, keeping a clean sheet in the past five.

Josh Brownhill to score anytime (5/1 with Betfred)

Despite scoring nine goals in the Championship so far, Burnley’s strikes have been spread out — and three of their goalscorers have since left. Josh Brownhill is the only Burnley player to net more than once in the Championship this season, scoring against Cardiff and Luton.

Burnley to win to nil (12/5 with 10bet)

Blackburn haven’t scored in any of their past five games against Burnley, their worst such run in this derby.

How to watch Burnley vs Blackburn live

Burnley vs Blackburn is scheduled for 12:30pm on Saturday 31st August, with the game broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football.

How both teams go into Burnley vs Blackburn

Life back in the Championship started well for Burnley, but now they face a test. The Clarets won both of their opening two games convincingly, starting the season with a 4-1 thrashing of Luton who were also relegated from the Premier League. Then, in Scott Parker’s second game, Cardiff were swept aside in a 5-0 thumping at Turf Moor.

But last weekend they lost their perfect record, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland. It came as part of a tough period for Burnley off the pitch, with a handful of players leaving the club. The past week alone has seen Sander Berge, Dara O’Shea, Anass Zaroury, Ameen Al-Dakhil and Johann Berg Gudmundsson all leave Burnley permanently, with Michael Obafemi departing on loan.

Sitting one point and two places above Burnley are rivals Blackburn. Rovers are experiencing their first full season under John Eustace, who replaced Jon Dahl Tomasson in February. It was a tough end to last season as they just about secured safety, so Eustace will be hoping his side can put that behind them.

Blackburn have started the season well enough so far, still unbeaten after three games. However, Rovers fans will be wary of good starts, having grown used to seeing their side eventually fall away come Christmas. But for now, Blackburn have sandwiched wins against Derby and Oxford United either side of a draw with Norwich.

Burnley host Blackburn at Turf Moor on Saturday 31st August at 12:30pm.

Burnley team news

On top of their exits, Burnley are also dealing with an injury to Jordan Beyer. However, he is their only confirmed absentee. Wout Weghorst looks set to be another departure before this game comes around, reportedly undergoing a medical at Ajax.

Blackburn team news

Blackburn appear to have a full-strength squad going into this game. Eustace rotated his side for the EFL Cup game against Blackpool, so we should see Blackburn return to a stronger XI. That will include Yuki Ohashi starting up front, with the Japanese forward doing his best to replace Sammie Szmodics’ goals.

Burnley vs Blackburn head-to-head

This has been a one-sided derby of late. Burnley have won their past six games against Blackburn and are unbeaten in the last nine. That came after a run of seven wins from eight (one draw) for Blackburn — though it did span almost 30 years.
