Liverpool’s 17-game unbeaten run finally came to an end, in controversial fashion, last weekend as they fell to defeat to Tottenham for the first time since October 2017. The Reds were reduced to 10-men just 26 minutes into the game after Curtis Jones received his marching orders after a VAR review for his challenge on Yves Bissouma, before Son Heung-min scored his sixth league goal of the season to give Spurs the lead just 10 minutes later. However, just two minutes before Son’s opener, Luis Diaz thought he had equalised for the away side, but saw his effort wrongly ruled out for offside, something the PGMOL have apologised for in the week.
The Reds did equalise just before half time through Cody Gakpo, his last action in the game before going off injured, but after fighting off wave after wave of Tottenham attack, they were finally beaten in stoppage time as Joel Matip turned Pedro Porro’s cross into his own net to hand Spurs their first win over Jürgen Klopp’s side in five years to extend their unbeaten start to the campaign to seven matches.
Among all the drama, Diogo Jota became the second Liverpool player to see red after receiving two yellow cards in two minutes as the away side were reduced to nine men, something the Premier League Independent Key Match Incidents Panel says was incorrect. The report stated that “the majority deemed the decision as incorrect as they felt it did not meet the threshold for a yellow card,” with the five members voting 3-2 against a booking for his second caution.
Last weekend was also a time to forget for Brighton, after they conceded six goals in a Premier League match for the first time in their history as they fell to a 6-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park. Roberto De Zerbi’s side found themselves 3-0 after just 26 minutes, the second earliest the Seagulls had conceded 3+ goals in a Premier League game after the game against Palace in 2018 (24 minutes), making it 11 Premier League games without keeping a clean sheet.

Over 3.5 goals > Mitoma anytime goalscorer >BTTS yes
If we’re to expect goals, we should also look to Kaoru Mitoma to lead the charge. The Japanese winger bagged a brace against Bournemouth in his last home match, taking his total to three goals in the Premier League so far this season. Mitoma, of course, scored a 92nd-minute winner the last time these two sides met in the FA Cup back in January.

Julio Enciso and Jakub Moder are both long term absentees for Brighton and they have been joined on the sidelines by James Milner, Adam Lallana and most recently full-back Pervis Estupinan, who has been ruled out for a month with a muscular injury. Tariq Lamptey was hoped to fill in at left-back once again after starting there against Marseille in the Europa League, but is now a doubt and may not be risked.

Thiago, Caoimhin Kelleher and Stefan Bajcetic remain out.
