Brentford vs Crystal Palace prediction: Glasner begins first full season

Brentford and Crystal Palace go head-to-head in a London derby on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.

The Eagles finished comfortably in 10th last season, which is their best return since the 2014/15 campaign. Brentford, meanwhile, slumped to 16th but still avoided relegation by a comfortable 13 points.

Three predictions for Brentford vs Crystal Palace

Brentford 1-1 Crystal Palace (11/2 with Betano)

Brentford have failed to win any of the six meetings between these two sides since they were promoted to the Premier League, losing 3-1 away in December following a sequence of five consecutive draws. It’s both the joint-most the Bees have faced a side in the competition without ever winning (also 6 v Newcastle) and the joint-most the Eagles have faced a side without ever losing (also 6 v QPR).

Jean-Philippe Mateta First Goalscorer

Since Oliver Glasner’s first game in charge on 24th February, Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored more Premier League goals than any player (13). The Frenchman has netted more in 13 appearances under Glasner, than he had in his first 80 Premier League games (11), also becoming just the second Palace player to score a Premier League hat-trick after Yannick Bolasie in 2015. Mateta is also fresh from an excellent Olympics with France, where he netted five goals in six appearances to help win a silver medal.

Draw (12/5 with Betano)

Excluding matches against promoted sides, five of Brentford’s last eight Premier League matches have finished level, while five of the last six matches between these two sides has also finished as a draw.

Although he remains a popular figure, Thomas Frank is under a bit of pressure to deliver after Brentford finished disappointingly in 16th last season. The Bees were still 13 points clear of the relegation zone, but a run of just three wins in 21 games between November and April was desperately disappointing after a decent start. That said, a solid end to the season saw Brentford lose just two of their last nine matches, offering hope that things can be turned around quickly.

Crystal Palace, on the other hand, finished 10th last season — their highest placing since 2014/15. The top half felt a long way off at the point Roy Hodgson left in mid-February, but Oliver Glasner hit the ground running with seven wins and just three defeats from his first 13 Premier League matches in charge, including a run of six wins and a draw in their last seven fixtures to end the campaign with wins over Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester United and Aston Villa along the way. Now, Glasner will look to build on that in his first full season in charge.

Palace finished the 2023/24 Premier League campaign with six wins from seven games (D1), winning the last three in a row by an aggregate score of 12-1 and are looking to win four in a row in the top flight for the first time since June 2020 with an opening day victory here.

Brentford host Crystal Palace at 2pm (UK time) on Sunday 18th August at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Brentford team news

Brentford’s biggest concern this summer will be keeping hold of Ivan Toney, although with the signing of Igor Thiago from Club Brugge, they at least have a contingency plan of the England striker leaves. Igor is set to miss the start of the season however, so Toney is expected to lead the line on the opening day.

Crystal Palace team news

Palace have added Daichi Kamada, Ismaila Sarr and Chadi Riad this summer, but have suffered a huge loss with Michael Olise joining Bayern Munich. Now, the Eagles face a battle to keep hold of Eberechi Eze, while Marc Guehi is also attracting attention after an excellent European Championships run with England.
