Brentford vs Arsenal

Brentford and Arsenal go head-to-head in a Premier League London derby on New Year’s Day at 5:30pm (UK time). The match will be shown live in the UK on TNT Sports 1. Check out our match preview and best bets, which include a player to be carded at 5/1.

Both Teams to Score (4/5 with BetMGM)

Only Liverpool have a better home record in the Premier League this season than Brentford, who have collected 22 points from a possible 27. I’ve decided to swerve the match result here and opted for both teams to score as my main play on New Year’s Day.

Arsenal haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last seven Premier League away games, having recorded nine shutouts in their previous 10 on the road. Brentford are the only side yet to keep a clean sheet at home in the Premier League this season. Their 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out was their first loss and the first time they failed to score at the Gtech Community Stadium this term. With this in mind, I’m surprised to see BetMGM going 4/5 for both teams finding the net here.

Kai Havertz to be Carded (5/1 with Sky Bet)

Kai Havertz was Arsenal’s most-carded player last season after being shown 11 yellows. Only Douglas Luiz, Marcos Senesi and Joao Palhinha were cautioned more in 2023/24 in the entire division.

This season, Havertz only has three yellows to his name, but with Gabriel Jesus finally finding some form, I’m expecting Havertz to drop back into a midfield role, which increases his chances of a card. The German was booked against Ipswich last time out when playing in midfield and with Sky Bet going 5/1 for another, I think this is a price that cannot be ignored.

How both teams go into Brentford vs Arsenal

At long last, Brentford’s unbeaten run at home has come to an end, with the Bees losing 2-0 to Nottingham Forest last time out. In fact, Brentford are in the midst of a worrying run of form, winless in four games across all competitions. Thomas Frank’s men are 12th in the Premier League, and could move into the top half with a win here.

Arsenal are unbeaten in 11 games across all formats. It has been a successful festive period so far for the Gunners, with wins against Crystal Palace and Ipswich in the Premier League. The gap to Liverpool remains 9 points, and Mikel Arteta will know he cannot afford any slip-ups if his side are to challenge the Reds in the second half of the campaign.

Brentford team news

Brentford remain without a host of first-team players, including Aaron Hickey, Ethan Pinnock, Rico Henry and Sepp van den Berg. Frank will hope a couple of those will return to action for this match, alongside Thiago Rodrigues and Mads Roerslev.

Arsenal team news

Mikel Arteta will hope Oleksandr Zinchenko is back for this match, although it’ll probably come a little too soon for Takehiro Tomiyasu. Arsenal will definitely be without Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling and Ben White.

Brentford vs Arsenal head-to-head

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last six matches against Brentford across all competitions, winning five of them.
