A battle for the top

Brazil had a tough end to 2023, going four games without victory in World Cup qualifying, which included three consecutive defeats. This year they have been better, winning three and drawing three of their six games. One win and one draw have come at 2024 Copa America, with Brazil in a good position to qualify for the quarter-finals.

They aren’t through yet but they’re on the brink. Brazil only need a point to secure their place and a defeat would also be okay as long as Costa Rica don’t overturn their goal difference deficit. But Brazil will have their eyes set on top spot. Whoever finishes second in Group D will face Group C winners Uruguay, who were perfect in their group, scoring nine goals.

Brazil started the 2024 Copa America with a goalless draw against Costa Rica before beating Paraguay 4-1. They trail Colombia by two points, meaning El Tri only need to avoid defeat to secure their spot at the top. It shouldn’t be a surprise either.

Colombia are in fantastic form and haven’t lost since February 2022 in qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar. They missed that tournament, but have built a 25-game unbeaten streak including
10 consecutive wins going into this match. That run started with a 2-1 win over Brazil and also saw Colombia beat Spain 1-0 in March.

Double chance: Colombia or Draw @ 17/20 with Ladbrokes

Colombia may have a poor recent record against Brazil, but they have proven themselves extremely tough to beat. At 2024 Copa America alone, Colombia have gone perfect with two wins from two games, scoring five goals and conceding just once. As mentioned, that has come as part of a wider 25-game unbeaten run that has lasted over two years.

Despite Colombia sitting top of the group perfect after two matches, Brazil are the favourites for this one. Brazil look to have found their shooting boots in their win over Paraguay, racing to a 3-0 lead by half-time.

Brazil vs Colombia team news

Neither team have suspensions to deal with for this game, but a handful of players are at risk for both Brazil and Colombia, which could influence the team picks.

James Rodriguez had to come off in Colombia’s last game due to injury but it was only a precaution and he should be fit to feature here.
