Can Sheffield United beat the odds?

It’s crunch time for Sheffield United. If the severity of the situation hasn’t already dawned on them, the Blades must surely know now that they’re facing an uphill battle. With just under a third of the season left to play, Sheffield United are bottom of the Premier League.

Although Chris Wilder’s men are level on points with Burnley, they have a vastly inferior goal difference, at an incredible -50. But even if they were closer, there is still a big gap between Sheffield United and actual safety. Nottingham Forest are currently 17th and they sit 11 points above Sheffield United. Even 18th-placed Luton are seven points clear of the Blades with a game in hand.

Wilder’s appointment, replacing Paul Heckingbottom, was meant to revive Sheffield United’s season but it hasn’t been enough. Sure, eight of Sheffield United’s 13 points this season have come since Wilder returned, but they have also lost nine games, including three heavy home defeats. Last time out, they were given another home bruising as they fell 6-0 to Arsenal, while their last away game was a 1-0 loss to Wolves.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, are 11 points clear of the relegation zone but they will be wary of their own form putting them in trouble. The Cherries do also have a game in hand on a lot of the teams around them, but that is against Luton who sit in the bottom three. It’s a position Bournemouth won’t have seen themselves in at the end of 2023, but it’s been a rough year for the Cherries.

After beating Fulham 3-0 to cap off a four-game winning streak and a run of six wins from seven (with one draw), Bournemouth went winless in seven in the Premier League. Six of those came after the turn of the year, including three defeats. The run was tough on the Cherries, with Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City among the opponents but Bournemouth also dropped points against teams around them such as Fulham and Nottingham Forest.

Back-to-back games against the bottom two have come at the right time for Bournemouth, who ended their rotten run with a 2-0 win at Burnley last weekend. They’ll look to all but finish the job of securing safety here.

Bournemouth vs Sheffield United match tip

Under 2.5 goals @ 33/20 by BetUK

You may look at Sheffield United’s defence and predict goals, with the Blades conceding 72 so far this season. But Bournemouth haven’t exactly been convincing in front of goal this season. The Cherries have scored 35 goals in the Premier League so far, with just five teams netting fewer. Of course, one of those teams is Sheffield United, with 22 goals for the campaign. 10 of those have come away from home, with Sheffield United failing to score in six games on the road in the league this season.

There won’t be many games this season where Bournemouth are such clear favourites. Sheffield United have been terrible away from home this season, losing 10 of their 13 Premier League games on the road. They’ve only managed to get draws against Brighton and Aston Villa — the latter a massive shock at the time — as well as their sole win against Luton. The win over Luton was just as big, with many believing defeat would have virtually condemned Sheffield United there and then. But Bournemouth perhaps aren’t as favoured as other teams might be, due to their own struggles for form.

Bournemouth are still waiting on the Premier League debut of Tyler Adams, who has only managed 20 minutes in the EFL since joining in the summer, struggling with injuries. The American is closer to a return but this game may be too soon. The Cherries are close to welcoming back the likes of James Hill, Max Aarons and Lloyd Kelly, but Marcos Senesi is out until early April.
