Bournemouth vs Newcastle prediction: Can Magpies put poor away record behind them?

Bournemouth host Newcastle United in their first home game of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

How to watch Bournemouth vs Newcastle live

Bournemouth vs Newcastle will kick off at 2pm (UK time) on Sunday, 25th August, and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.

Three predictions for Bournemouth vs Newcastle

Bournemouth 2-1 Newcastle (11/1 with Bet365)

Newcastle seriously struggled away from home in the Premier League last season, with 11 defeats. They also only won one of their first 10 games on the road in the league last season.

Antoine Semenyo to score anytime (13/5 with Unibet)

Dominic Solanke has departed to Bournemouth, so shouldering most of the goalscoring responsibilities for now is winger Antoine Semenyo. The Ghana international was second only to Solanke for Premier League goals among Cherries players last season with eight, and he’s already off the mark in this campaign, netting a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

Over 1.5 Bournemouth goals (6/5 with SpreadEx)

Part of Newcastle’s poor away form came down to their defence. The Magpies conceded 40 goals away from home in the Premier League season. Only Luton, Sheffield United and West Ham let in more on the road.

How both teams come into Bournemouth vs Newcastle

Premier League football resumes at the Vitality Stadium with Andoni Iraola hoping for a positive home start in his second season at Bournemouth. Last season the Cherries were among the underachievers at home in the Premier League. They won seven of their 19 home league games, with only five teams managing fewer, and lost six. Bournemouth also drew six games, with only two teams managing more at home in the Premier League last season. Iraola will hope for a better start to the new season, with Bournemouth having to wait until their sixth home game for their first win in 2023/24. However, it’s worth noting that Bournemouth did play Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal within their first five home games.

The Cherries came from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend, so will now look to use that confidence to make the most of home advantage.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will be hoping to improve on their away form in what was a tough season for visiting sides. The Magpies won six of their 19 Premier League away games last season, which was about average in the division. However, they really struggled in their other games. Newcastle lost 11 away matches in the Premier League, with only the three relegated sides suffering more defeats. They lost their opening two and after a three-game unbeaten run would lose five away games in a row, including a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth. Things did end slightly brighter with three wins from their final five away games, but that did still include two defeats.

The Magpies beat Southampton 1-0 at home on the opening weekend, but can count themselves very lucky to get all three points after attempting just three shots compared to 19 from the Saints — not helped by Fabian Schar’s 28th-minute red card.

Bournemouth host Newcastle at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, 25th August, at 2pm (UK time).

Bournemouth team news

Enes Unal has undergone surgery on a broken toe so will miss out here, alongside Tyler Adams and David Brooks. With Adams, Andoni Iraola has admitted he isn’t sure when the American will be back, mentioning September and October. Regardless, the Cherries will likely start with the same XI that drew away at Forest last week.

Newcastle team news

Callum Wilson is expected to miss Newcastle’s first few games of the season including their trip to his former club. Lewis Miley won’t be ready to return either, while Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are longer-term absentees. Sandro Tonali’s ban from football is winding down and this will be the final game he misses. Fabian Schar misses out due to suspension.

Bournemouth vs Newcastle head-to-head

This fixture is pretty equal when it comes to results, with Newcastle slightly edging out Bournemouth. The Magpies have won seven games alongside six draws and six defeats. But Bournemouth were unbeaten against Newcastle in the league last season.
