  • Dominic Solanke has opened the scoring in two of Bournemouth’s last five matches.

Dominic Solanke dreaming of an England return

It’s been a long time since Dominic Solanke came off the bench in the 75th minute of England’s 0-0 friendly draw with Brazil at Wembley for his only senior international cap to date. In fact, it’s been over six years. At times, the striker has never looked further away from adding to that sole appearances but now, his exclusion from future camps and the Three Lions’ squad for this summer’s European Championships could only be looked upon as incredibly harsh.

Solanke is enjoying an incredible rise to form under Andoni Iraola this season, scoring 16 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions so far this season, including 14 in 25 Premier League outings — only Mohamed Salah (15) and Erling Haaland (17) have more.

Harry Kane is the obvious starter and talisman for England but behind him, Gareth Southgate has cycled through numerous options in searching for a consistent back-up to the Bayern Munich striker, including the likes of Tammy Abraham and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and most recently Ollie Watkins and Callum Wilson.

The latter is struggling once again with injuries, potentially opening the door for a new face. But even if Wilson had stayed fit all season, surely Solanke’s incredible form would put him in line for a call-up. The 26-year-old is daring to dream.

“Everyone’s dream is to play international football and represent their country,” Solanke said in an interview with The Athletic. “So it’s always going to be in my mind. I just need to carry on doing what I’m doing and keep scoring goals for Bournemouth, to try to win as many games as we can. Then it will be down to Gareth who he ends up picking.”

As the Premier League side and on a run of just two defeats in their last six across all competitions, Bournemouth are the firm favourites for this FA Cup clash. Leicester will be no pushovers as they ride high in the Championship, but their odds aren’t helped by losing each of their last two matches, 2-1 to Middlesbrough and 3-1 against promotion rivals Leeds United.
