Liverpool are the most-successful side in EFL Cup history, winning the competition for the ninth time in 2022, ending what had been a 10-year wait for success. However, last season their defence ended in the fourth round, beaten by Manchester City. This season, Liverpool have knocked out Championship side Leicester City to reach this stage, handed a bye to the third round owing to their Europa League participation.

Bournemouth are in the fourth round of the EFL Cup for the second season in a row but they haven’t made it past this stage since 2018/19, when they reached the quarter-finals. Entering in the second round this year after the promotion, Bournemouth beat Championship side Swansea City thanks to Ryan Christie’s last-minute effort. Things were more straightforward last time out, though, as Bournemouth ran out 2-0 winners against Stoke.
