Newcastle find relief in reduced schedule, but another busy period looms

Injuries have ruined Newcastle on so many fronts this season, no doubt fuelled largely by trying to juggle four competitions prior to Christmas with what is still a modestly-sized squad. However, the Magpies went out of both the Champions League and EFL Cup before the festive period, meaning 2024 has placed far more reasonable physical demands on their squad.

That is something Eddie Howe has been thankful for, giving him a chance to work on more in-depth training sessions with his squad, as well as the obvious fitness boost extended rest periods can offer.

“It has been really good to be able to train. We have seen the benefits in some of the performances recently, the players have been better for it. The vibe in the squad has been better,” Howe told reporters at a recent press conference.

They are, however, in the midst of a busy period. The Magpies first travelled on Arsenal on Saturday night, losing 4-1 at the Emirates in the Premier League, before this match which comes just under 72 hours later. And then it’s back up to St. James’ Park next Saturday for a Premier League meeting with Wolves.

Howe has players like Joe Willock and Alexander Isak back available, but these seven days are sure to, once again, place great demands upon the fragile fitness of his squad.

Blackburn vs Newcastle match tip

Over 3.5 goals @ 1/1 with Sky Bet

Newcastle have been the team to watch for goals lately. Since a 2-0 win over Fulham in the fourth round of the FA Cup, Newcastle’s past five games have all seen at least four goals scored. During that run there has been a 3-1 win for Newcastle, a 3-2 win, a 4-1 defeat, a 2-2 draw and a 4-4 draw — amassing 26 goals in total. In fact, eight of Newcastle’s past 10 games across all competitions have seen at least four goals scored.

Naturally given they’re playing in two different divisions, Newcastle are the strong favourites for this match. That’s also helped by their recent upturn in form, as well as Blackburn sitting 16th in the Championship and winning just one of their last six matches.

Newcastle will, however, no doubt feel immense pressure from their fans as they aim to end a 69-year trophy drought dating back to 1955.
