Portuguese champions Benfica are in the Champions League group stage for the third consecutive season, making it to the quarter-finals in each of the past two campaigns. It came after a poor run in the competition which had seen them fail to make it out of the group stage for two years and then fall in the qualifying rounds. Last season, Benfica actually finished top of their group ahead of PSG en route to a quarter-final defeat to Inter Milan.

This feels like a pretty even group, and Salzburg may feel confident of making it to the knockout stages for just the second time. Overall, Salzburg have been in the Champions League group stage five times, finishing third on four occasions. One of those occasions came last season when Salzburg finished behind Chelsea and AC Milan, dropping down to the Europa League where they were beaten by Roma.

Benfica vs Red Bull Salzburg match tip

Rafa to score or assist

Just one goal behind Di Maria so far this season is Rafa Silva and he’s battling it out with his teammate to be involved in the most strikes. Rafa does currently lead the way so far, adding three assists to his three goals, so he’ll be looking to be the danger man against Salzburg.

Benfica vs Red Bull Salzburg Bet-Builder tip

Angel Di Maria to score anytime, BTTS & Benfica to win

It’s hard to judge how sides will start the new Champions League campaign, but history shines on Benfica’s side. Benfica went unbeaten at home in the group stage last season, but Salzburg are also without a win in their last seven away games in the Champions League. However, Salzburg are a tiny bit further into their league campaign, playing seven games so far and are still perfect. Of course, Angel Di Maria is a man who knows what it takes to win the Champions League, and he’ll be hoping to add to his bright return to Benfica.
