Belgium is aiming to win its first international title at Euro 2024. Under the leadership of former Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig head coach Domenico Tedesco, Belgium had a strong qualifying performance, finishing unbeaten in Group F, just one point ahead of Austria. Despite changes in the team, Belgium is still considered a strong contender for the title. However, their disappointing performance in the World Cup shows that success is not guaranteed, and many players from that team will be looking to set things right in Germany.

The showdown between Belgium and Romania occurs on June 22 at the RheinEnergieStadion, Cologne.

After missing Euro 2020, Romania is preparing for the upcoming European Championships. They hope to advance past the group stage for the second time in their history. Romania’s best Euro performance was in 2000 when they finished second in their group, ahead of England and Germany. They qualified for the upcoming tournament by finishing on top of their qualifying group. They aim to carry this momentum into the tournament and cause some surprises.

Both teams know the best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stages. If one team loses, they will remain optimistic, as there is still a chance to advance.

Belgium Latest Team News

Since being appointed Belgium’s national team manager, succeeding the long-tenured Roberto Martinez, Domenico Tedesco has been flexible in the Red Devils’ lineup. One thing is sure: they’ll be going with a back four, with him never diverting from that in any of his previous matches. A healthy Kevin De Bruyne should take up the number 10 role in Belgium’s expected 4-2-3-1, with Romelu Lukaku leading the forward line. Johan Bakayoko and Leandro Trossard should occupy the flanks, though Jeremy Doku will provide stiff competition. Koen Casteels is currently in possession of the number one journey, with Wout Faes and Jan Vertonghen sitting in front as Belgium’s first-choice central defensive pairing.

Romania Latest Team News

Edward Iordănescu is a highly experienced manager in Eastern European football, although he may not be well-known to most people. He aims to give his players consistency and stick to the tactics that brought Romania to this point. This involves using a formation close to 4-2-3-1 with a strong defensive foundation – they only conceded five goals during qualifying – and a powerful counter-attack.

Belgium vs Romania Head-to-Head

Belgium is expected to have already secured three points in the championship by the kickoff of this game. Domenico Tedesco’s team, who impressively qualified for the competition, has been placed in Group E alongside Slovakia, Ukraine, and Romania, making them the favourites to advance as group winners. Belgium’s first match is against Slovakia, followed by a showdown with Romania. However, history is not in Belgium’s favour as Romania has won three of their last five meetings (with one draw and one loss), although three of those matches occurred between 1993 and 1999.
