The stats behind our Bayer Leverkusen vs Roma predictions:

  • Florian Wirtz has scored seven goals in his last six starts.
  • Roma have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight games.

Can Bayer keep the streak going?

With just five games remaining if they reach the Europa League final, Bayer Leverkusen is still unbeaten across every competition this season. Xabi Alonso’s men have already ended Bayern’s dominance and won the Bundesliga title for the first time. With a DFB Pokal final with second division Kaiserslautern on the horizon, they could end the campaign invincible with three trophies and a famous treble.

Die Werkself have been unstoppable, either blitzing past sides or scoring countless stoppage-time goals to keep the run going. At the weekend, they extended that run to 48 games with a 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, matching the longest streak in the ‘UEFA era,’ which was set by Benfica between 1963 and 1965.

Avoiding defeat here would not only set a new unbeaten record but would see Leverkusen reach their third final in major European competition, after previously doing so in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup and 2001/02 UEFA Champions League. It would also mean that Xabi Alonso would become the sixth different Spanish manager to reach a Europa League final, with five already being the most from any nation (Sánchez Flores, Benítez, Emery, Lopetegui and Mendilibar). Indeed, nine of the previous 14 finals in this competition have featured a Spanish coach in charge of one of the teams.

It will be incredibly tough for Roma to overcome their first leg defecit, especially as they haven’t won on any of their last six away trips to face German sides in European competition (D2 L4), and have netted just six goals combined across those games. If they do achieve the impossible, however, they would become just the third side to reach the final in consecutive Europa League tournaments, after Benfica (2012-13 and 2013-14) and Sevilla (2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16).

Bayer Leverkusen vs Roma match tip

Florian Wirtz to score anytime @ 5/2 with Bet365

The German has been crucial to Bayer Leverkusen’s success this season, and with seven goals in his last six starts, you wouldn’t back against him scoring here, especially after his goal in the first leg. No player aged 21 or under has been directly involved in more goals across the top five European leagues and European competition this season than the midfielder (30).
