Austria vs Turkey Euro 2024 prediction: A big moment for both nations
Austria vs Turkey latest prediction
This half of the Euro 2024 knockout bracket is a fascinating one, and very open for potential routes to the final. Austria are something of a surprise name on this route, but that isn’t to say they don’t deserve to be here. No one expected Austria to finish top of Group C, but they were well worth their six points.
Although they started the group with a defeat to France, that only came via an unfortunate own goal. Austria bounced back from that to beat Poland 3-1 and Netherlands 3-2, the latter sealing top spot. It’s testament to the work done by Ralf Rangnick, with only three European nations having a higher win percentage than Austria’s 60% since the former Manchester United boss took charge.
Turkey, meanwhile, have banished the demons of Euro 2020. Three years ago Turkey went into the European Championship as the most-tipped dark horse but crashed out at the group stage without a point. Fast forward to this summer and expectations were slightly lower, as fans hoped to avoid the disappointment of Euro 2020.
In Group F, Turkey were still expected to qualify for the last 16, when comparing them to Georgia and Czech Republic. And two victories over those sides earned Turkey second place, having lost their middle game to Portugal. But that was to be expected, as Turkey rotated, perhaps knowing that their final game against Czech Republic was a lot more important.
The final last 16 tie at Euro 2024, Austria take on Turkey at 8pm on Tuesday 2nd July at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.
Turkey’s final group game against Czech Republic was a card fest with 17 yellows shown and two reds. Eleven of those cards were shown to Turkey, but the most likely to be booked in this game might be an Austrian.
Stefan Posch has committed nine fouls at Euro 2024 so far, more than any other Austria or Turkey player. He has also been booked once, so knows he is at risk of suspension.

Austria latest team news
Ralf Rangnick was pretty fluid with his Austria team in the group stage, with only five players starting all three games. One of those, of course, was goalkeeper Patrick Pentz, with Marcel Sabitzer, Nicolas Seiwald, Florian Grillitsch and Stefan Posch also used from the off in all three matches.
Marko Arnautovic started the last two and should start this one, having replaced Michael Gregoritsch as the first-choice striker. Patrick Wimmer has only started one game, but will miss this match out through suspension due to an accumulation of yellow cards. Gernot Trauner is out with an injury.
Turkey latest team news
Turkey should match Austria for the formation, lining up with a 4-2-3-1 in all three of their group matches. The front four essentially picks itself, especially after Hakan Calhanoglu received his second yellow card of the tournament in Turkey’s 2-1 win over Czech Republic.
Orkun Kokcu should now come in to replace Calhanoglu, back in the starting XI after his assist for Cenk Tosun’s winning goal. Kenan Yildiz, Baris Alper Yilmaz and Arda Guler will complete the attack, having worked well together at the tournament so far. There also needs to be a change in defence, with Samet Akaydin received his second yellow of the tournament last time out. Abdulkerim Bardakci is likely to replace him — back from a suspension of his own — with Merih Demiral moving over to the right side.
Austria vs Turkey head-to-head
Austria won their first six games against Turkey but have only managed three victories from the next 11 meetings. However, two of those have come in the past three games, thrashing Turkey 6-1 in March.
