Two Euro 2024 dark horses go head to head
Both Austria and Serbia head into Euro 2024 carrying the ‘dark horse’ tag. From Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer for Austria, to Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic for Serbia, these are two sides packed with a surprisingly high volume of quality and much will be expected of them among supporters.
That said, both have been drawn into tough groups. Serbia occupy Group C and must go up against England, as well as fellow dark horses Denmark and a dangerous Slovenia side. As for Austria, things are even more difficult as they share Group D with both France and the Netherlands, as well as Robert Lewandowski’s Poland.
With that in mind, the pre-tournament preparations must go well, with both sides looking to build up some momentum ahead of some challenging group-stage matches.
Austria haven’t gone beyond the last 16 of a major tournament since reaching the 1954 World Cup semi-finals, while Serbia have never made it out of the groups as an independent nation. There will be huge disappointment back home if they don’t change that.
Austria vs Serbia match tip
Austria to win and BTTS No @ 12/5 by Midnite
Austria do go into this friendly, and Euro 2024, in good form. They have won their last five matches, keeping four clean sheets along the way. Hakan Calhanoglu is the only player to breach the Austrian net during that time, and even that came from the penalty spot.
Austria vs Serbia odds
Austria are the favourites for this one but the odds are fairly close. The hosts have won their past five games including a 2-0 win over Germany and 6-1 thrashing of Turkey. Serbia, meanwhile, have been a bit inconsistent with just four wins from their past 10 matches.
Austria vs Serbia team news
Austria will wait to see whether Marcel Sabitzer will be involved in this game, having played in the Champions League final for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, linking up late with the squad.
Serbia have already named their 26-man squad for Euro 2024 so have a smaller pool of players at their disposal. But all 26 will be available to feature, including all-time top goalscorer Aleksandar Mitrovic who scored 40 goals in 43 games across all competitions for Al-Hilal.
