We’re into the quarter-finals of the 2023 Asian Cup, and things are hotting up. Australia are at the Asian Cup for the fifth time, having never failed to reach the quarter-finals. However, they have fallen at this stage in two of their previous four appearances, including four years ago. The Socceroos won their group relatively easily this year, beating India and Syria before securing top spot with a draw against Uzbekistan. That put Australia up against Indonesia, who finished third in Group D, and it was a very comfortable 4-0 victory — equalling their goal tally from the group stage in one match.

South Korea, meanwhile, are seen as one of the major nations of Asian football but they haven’t mean champions of the continent since 1960. They went closest to winning the crown again in 2015, when they were beaten by Australia. Like Australia, South Korea were knocked out at the quarter-final stage in 2019, so they’ll be hoping to do one better this year. But South Korea haven’t instilled confidence in their fans. After winning their opening group game against Bahrain, South Korea missed out on top spot following draws with Jordan and Malaysia. In the last 16 they needed an equaliser from Cho Gue-sung in the ninth minute of injury time to stay in the tie, eventually winning on penalties.

Australia vs South Korea match tip

Australia to qualify @ 6/5 with CopyBet

South Korea are the favourites for this tie, but it’s hard to predict a win for the Taegeuk Warriors. They just haven’t turned up at the Asian Cup yet this year, having to scrape through a few of their matches. They needed a injury-time own goal to secure a 2-2 draw against Jordan in the group stage, before relying on an even later equaliser to save their skin in the last 16. At the same time, Australia have grown in confidence and have put together a run of three consecutive wins.
