The last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup begins with Australia taking on Indonesia, and the Socceroos are hoping to extend a current streak in the competition. Participating in the Asian Cup for just the fifth time, having been part of the Oceania confederation before, Australia have never failed to reach the quarter-finals. There have been two knockouts at the quarter-final stage, including four years ago, as well their runners-up finish in 2011 and — of course — when they won the tournament in 2015. Australia went unbeaten in the group stage this year, finishing top with two wins and one draw, being held by Uzbekistan in their final match.

Indonesia, meanwhile, are also in their fifth Asian Cup but this is a first. In their previous four appearances, all coming between 1996 and 2007 (co-hosting at the latter), Indonesia fell at the group stage with just two wins from their 12 matches. This year, they’ve only added one more win to take it to three from 15, but it was enough. Beating Vietnam in their second game, sandwiched between defeats to Iraq and Japan, Indonesia’s three points was enough to be among the four best third-placed teams, albeit fourth.

Australia vs Indonesia match tip

Australia to win and BTTS @ 23/10 with BetVictor

There won’t be many last 16 ties at a major international tournament more one-sided in terms of who people expect to win, and it will certainly go down as a shock if Australia are knocked out. However, this is tournament football and Indonesia can make things nervy. Indonesia have scored in all three of their Asian Cup games so far at the tournament, though they left it late to get a consolation against Japan last time out.
